Or possibly from being beaten to death by 200 nervous passengers?
Or will I be tasered by an onboard air marshall as a suspected terrorist?
Or asked to leave the plane at 30000ft and make my own way home ….?

All I want to do is take my Tom Tom with me when I fly to Madrid on wednesday night – so that I can zoom in and watch my progress from Heathrow on it… 🙂

I don’t want it badly enough to earn a Darwin award over it though.

Feel free to point out the errors of my ways 😉

Will you have to plug it into the cigarette lighter on the cockpit dashboard ?

should be fine. Almost certainly one of the staff will come over and ask you to turn it off but just point out it only recieves and doesn’t send. You might need to hold it by the window for it to work.

I used my etrex on the flight to the Alps, was fun seeing the speed and distance changing so much. Got a lot higher than I expected on such a short flight too.

What a fascinating life you must lead if you are interested in watching your progress on a plane.

I had to jam mine against the window to get it to work, but there should be no risk of interference. Might be worth switching it on (in silent mode!) before you take off, so it has a chance to position fix while stationary.

    Cheers samuri 🙂

Flaperon – I will make sure it’s fully charged so I can have it on from push back. This is actually the first part of a 16 hr flight to JNB via Barcelona and then Madrid, but satnav only has maps for western europe, so at some point over gibralter i’m gonna fly into nothingness.

I might wear my polar hrm and log the flight – I’ll be able to look at an altitude graph for the duration then. I guess if I want to wear the actual HRM I can have a graph of heart rate too. Will be interesting to see what it gets to when we hit the updrafts over the equator!

(oh mastiles_fanylion I did this trip using various routes 4 times last year, via Paris, Munich and Frankfurt. Beleive me the inflight mag can only hold a persons attention for so long!)

Won’t the altitude thingy not work in a pressurised cabin?

I’ve run my GPS out of curiosity (on my N95 in offline/flight mode) and it got a good fix (and had good maps for everywhere I was over). Better than the rubbish seat back map thing.

the altimeter doesnt run off air pressure, it works from your position (it takes 3 satelites to define the co-ordinates, 4 to fix the altitude).

Not sure if my satnav does altitude – was going to use my polar. I wondered about the pressurized cabin. maybe I’ll leave it running in my baggage in the hold and forget about the HR bit.

You could switch it off when you get near to Madrid, just in case like 😕

baggage holds are mostly pressurised these days too.
