Looking at lower end of the market, so I am wondering which have an alloy cage thing to protect my hub.

hope say you should use xt as they have alloy carrier. SLX do but only on 3 ish rings i think?? i run deore abd have done for a few years – make sure lockring is done up tight! you may need a couple of taps to release the cassette and it will score the ally freehub body. you can always buy a steel freehub if it gets that bad.

I got a m771 XT from the woolyhatshop through amazon for £45…best I could find including postage.

I use SLX, don’t think it makes any difference to XT personally (Hope’s XT advice pre-dates SLX so it might be as simple as that)

I’ve used xt and slx. Slx has been fine.
