About 4 years ago, i was stuck in traffic on northern section of M25 in one of the two tunnels up there in my red Berlingo van. There were about 16 high value sports cars including a beautiful Ferrari next to me (couldn’t tell you model but one of the recent ones with switches on wheel), but my mate sat in passenger seat put window down and jokingly tried to swap my red van for red Ferrari, unsurprisingly it was declined, but not before the driver really gave the accelerator some right foot in the tunnel, sounded like Valhalla!

As the traffic finally started moving, my mate asked me if i knew who it was driving it, i said i had no idea and he told me it was Nick Mason

A Velocette Venom 500 with high compression piston, GP carb, flat cam followers, unbaffled reverse cone mega, and tuned by Geof Dodkin, being run up and down its powerband through a narrow winding road in a Highland glen.

No helmets in those days, so it was easier to appreciate real music. Wish I still had it. 🙂

I’m biased though as I love the sound of my 330, but the csl is on acid.

In the early nineties I was passed by one of these. sounds absolutely feral but under that exhaust note you can still detect the cultured note of the v12. https://youtu.be/kEYKt0EmvnE

can always tell a n00b at the pod… trying to get nice close up photos of the exhaust flames… the burnout is exciting, then they totally c**p themselves and get the shakiest photo ever and nearly drop the camera

I used to sign on as a photographer at Avon Park Raceway, as I believe it’s now known, and I’d squat right by the Armco barrier at the edge of the strip as the cars and bikes did their burnouts.
One of my best photos was when a top fuel rail had done its burnout, backed up into the puddle of grip juice, spun the tyres, and as the sticky goo flicked up off the tyre it caught fire. Only for a second, but I caught it.
Sometime I really must get around to scanning the best photos I took back then.
I always made sure I was wearing proper hearing protection, I knew it was going to be sodding loud!

If were going to have a v16brm let’s have this one

What you’ve got there is the onboard of the first vid, which has been chopped about – all from Donington, Nick Mason’s BRM for the CD that accompanied the excellent Into The Red book. Sounds better from the outside – heard one at a Silverstone meet, unbelievable volume, crowds gathered as they warmed it up in the paddock, and applauded when they cut it off.

Respec to the RC166 being run round an oval patch of tarmac, although I’m minded of Ian Malcomb’s comment from Jurrasic Park – “T-Rex doesn’t want to be fed – he wants to hunt…”.

And for 2 stroke afficianados, I give you Nino’s CRF-framed, Mugen-powered CR125. Not sure who Nino is, but his bike is sweet and he can RIDE. 🙂
