Really doesn't moving from cold – coughs and splutters and moves forward jerkily. Once its gone 20 metres its fine – any one got any ideas – MOT's due and I could do with it passing.

Vaxhall Omega 2.2 Petrol auto if that helps.

Big pat on the back on offer for first person to diagnose the problem!

Using a lot or losing a lot? If it's the first then scrap it, or get you're credit card out! Most likely Valve stem seals or piston rings.
Should show something up on emisions test on MOT though.

What happens if you give it a bit rev before you try moving?
Any clouds of smoke when it first starts?

    I suggest a compression test.

Valve stem seals springs to mind, does it smoke (blue) on start up from cold and then clear when the engine begins to run better? If so this would point to stem seals. Could however be a huge number of things. Enging management temp sensor not working and not increasing fuel when starting from cold, head gasket on way out, takes a little while to build compression? I could go on…

Need more details, as golden wonder says, is it using a lot or using a lot of oil???
