  • What were/are the collectives favourite sweets?

I was just doing some washing up using apple orchard flavour fairy liquid and received a strong memory of apple flavour nerds back in the 80s. If I remember rightly they came in duel flavour packets and the apple came teamed with strawberry with Frankenstein on the packet. I am going to do a search now to see if I can get some.

Just for reminiscence which sweets did you enjoy as a nipper or still do now for some long ride sugar hits or a cheeky suck in the workshop?

I remember those, then the name changed to starburst. I remember the ads suggesting different names they could use – Chimpy chomps was much better. I think this thread is going to increase my sugar intake above recommended guidelines as i will have to re sample the old favourites!

Here it is, it was Chimpy Chompies.

Even just the name “apple orchard flavour” brings back memories of that period, it’s funny.  Curly wurlies ftw though.  I don’t know if they were actually larger then or it was just me being smaller but back then they were king

Yeah, I’m sure they were long enough to drag along the ground in ’84!

Edit: And Wagon Wheels were big enough to put on a wagon!

Moffat toffee (not actually toffee) reminds me of sitting on french beaches in the 70s.

You can still buy nerds, they disappeared for a while due to the glass incident.

For me it’s aniseed balls and double lolly’s

Id completely forgotten about Midget Gems. I used to get 1/4 of Cola Cubes and a 1/4 of Pineapple Chunks combo. I suppose what with Brexit we will be getting those measurements back!

I’m not a fan of aniseed these days, must have been the absinth excesses. I have never experienced Ruffle bars or Moffat Toffee. I shall have to go looking or will I need a time machine?

Going into town now so I will keep ’em peeled for Nerds, I suspect Mini and Micro will approve.

Edit: Rubard and Custard is probably the only boiled type sweet i eat as Mrs Sims handbag is always armed with a bag.

    Bonbons
    Cola cubes
    Rhubarb and custard
    Herbal soothers
    Liquorice blackcurrant
    Lemon sherbert’s

Whatever happened to newsagents selling sweets for 50p per 1/4? I can inhale a bag of harribo but it’s just not the same.

    Drumsticks
Refreshers – the chews, but the fizzy sweets are not bad either
    Fruit Salads
    Wham bars
    Highland Toffee
    Pineapple chunks
    Flying saucers
    Lemon sherbets

I also love wine gums, but it seems they can trigger my migraines… doesn’t stop me from trying them every once in a while.

And yes, my mouth contains more than its fair share of amalgam.

Back in the day my fave sweeties were

Blackjacks, Fruit Salad, Wham bars and jawbreakers. Chocolate wise, Treets and peanut Banjos.

    @bsims
, those Green Gorgo bars, did they have the black fizzy bits in as opposed to the rainbow coloured bits in a Wham?

Current favourite sweeties are Swedish Fish. The proper Swedish ones, not the abysmal American ones. They are truly rank. Love a herbal tablet, too. Always have.

@johnyrobertson, Yes, nice and sour, not quite like the super sour gobstoppers but enough to make you dribble.

The sweets that looked like cigarettes when I was litte, then sherbet dabs and pineaapple cubes. I’m now into jelly beans.

I can’t believe nobody is amazed that there is a street called Wham Bar Drive.

    That was not a mock-up. It’s real.

Oh – jap desserts and cola cubes for me. And Barker & Dobson blackcurrant and liquorice.
