What Is a Woman? is a 2022 American online film about gender and transgender issues presented by conservative political commentator Matt Walsh.

Somebody to whom an ex-Beatle could hardly explain his mixed emotions at his thoughtlessness.

Do I win?

Probably best to ask what is a female, it has been defined more over the years.

With the upcoming arguments on this thread, can i just be first to say i blame Keir Starmer?

I used to be confident about answering that question but since an STW editorial piece I've realised that some people think men are women if they decide to be so I have no definitive answer. Don't want to tread on any toes.

In answer to the OP's question, I'm not entirely sure, but luckily thanks to the Labour Shadow Health Secretary I now know the difference men and women:

"Men have penises, women have vaginas, here ends my biology lesson."

Whatever the answer is, asking the Section 28 generation is not going to produce a sensible answer.  But you knew that already, didn't you?

Why not go talk to some young people (particularly young women) who have a far better handle on all this than most members of this forum.

Ernie, is Wes being (accidentally?) fairly progressive there? By his logic, once someone has transitioned and had corresponding surgery then they are the gender they transitioned to.  A woman who 'FtM' transitions and has surgery is a man. Admittedly it does rely on surgery as well, but it's a start

According to Bob Marley, a woman is a person who doesn’t cry.

I think Bob was inferring that women make men cry. A lack of woman means no crying. Therefore I conclude that a woman is somebody or something that makes men cry. By this logic the movies ET and Watership Down are women.

In all seriousness No Woman, No Cry is best summed up, in my opinion, by The Wailers bass player

In the song, Marley mentions the Government Yards of Trench Town, a public housing project in Kingston where he grew up. The lyrics also include references to cornmeal porridge, a popular breakfast in Jamaica.

Wailers bassist Aston 'Family Man' Barrett told NME in 2012: "The song is about the strength in the mama of course, strength in the ladies. And we love a woman with a backbone. Something like a wishbone!

"They have to be like a she lion! Woman strong, you know, not depending on the man. Of course the man is there to help you, then for every successful man, there is a good woman."

Because what ever answer I gave other than no definitve answer I would be treading on someone's toes. On some subjects: Brexit, Putin, Trump, climate sceptics... I'll happily express an opinion and jump on toes in ski boots with Simond Makalu crampons if people disagree. Gender - treat people as you'd hope to be treated yourself.

Sure, and it is very important to point that out. But I can't see anything posted so far which could be seen like that. It's mostly references to songs and a recognition that definitions have become more blurred in recent times.

Nothing wrong with that - everyone has the right to be themselves, and if they want, different.

Doesn't talking about it freely and not treating as a taboo subject help to guarantee that it is accepted?

To be fair, I only made the Bob Marley reference as a toungue in cheek comment meant in good spirit.

Fully agree with that @ernielynch

The most worrying ting about these kind of conversations it other dictating how others ought to think.

As far as I can make out, a good way of winding up both sides of this unfortunately polarised issue is to say "it depends on the context in which the question is being asked". So I won't say that.

There are only two genders - those who enjoy shopping for soft furnishings and those don't.

This is actually a pretty difficult question to answer.  Often, people want to think of things in terms of the language we use - but in reality it needs to be the other way round: the language should be reflecting things that exist.  For example, English only has two personal (i.e. not grammatical) gender words, leading to endless arguments.  Some languages have three or more genders for people.  If we were all speaking one of those, then the debate would pretty much disappear.  Doggedly trying to fit everything you see in the world into the confines of the language you happen to speak is foolish.  That's why we can add new words or redefine existing ones.

I can understand that sex is biological, and gender is a concept and as such people can and should be whatever they want.

I don’t understand though, why a biological male who identifies as woman wants to dress like a biological female typically dresses - when does a woman have to dress a certain way. And if sex is irrelevant (ask my wife) because gender is a concept, why does it matter what bits you have?

Just live your life however you want, with the bits you were given as we’re told they don’t define anything anyway.  Unless of course your body does define your gender and the concept stuff is just bollocks (sorry), in which you can’t change it really.

I’m almost certainly not articulating this well, but I don’t know how to. The quicker we get away from labels and just let people live however they want without prejudice the better. Then an any pointless and unhelpful questions I have, and the debates, stop.

If anyone identifies as female, male, haddock, cheese sandwich, or lawnmower, then the only way to address them / it is with kindness.

Rule 2: Be kind.

Unless it isn't self loathing and you are none of the above and just don't respect the opinions of any straight white middle class blokes of course, because they are all obviously evil and prejudiced.

I'm kinda old-fashioned, I like to ask people their name then address them by it. People seem to like that.

I don't mean to come across as pompous, although I'm sure I will do...

My basic fundamental philosophy for everything is really really simple... if you are not hurting anyone else, then crack on. It's really that simple.

If others take offence to that (whatever 'that' might be) then that's a problem for them by definition.

A woman, pronounced Woah man, is an irate or frightened gentleman that needs to be calmed down. Not unlike a startled horse. Gently stroking the head of the affected individual whilst quietly saying “whoa boy, whoa” or “whoa man, easy” in a soothing manner should return the gentleman to his former state.
