Birthday do tomorrow and I'm at a loss. He likes his gin, but I'm not up on what's good, I've always been happy with Gordons so haven't explored further. What's good and do you know of any good offers on. Too late for mail-order, so Tesco, M&S, Morrisons, Sainsbury and Asda are my options.

Cheers, hic!

I hate Gin

However I bought my sis in law Hendricks which she loved. Gorgous bottle too.

Im a massive Rum fan so if you bought me Captain Morgan I'd cry.

Aim high!

Hendricks is a good call.

I picked up a bottle of Opihr which is an oriental spiced Gin makes a change and is very pleasant.

Bombay Saphire is a safe bet.

Bombay Sapphire as an option to the good Hendricks advice.

Hendricks is the default answer to this and it's nice enough but if he likes gin even a tiny bit he's bound to have tried it. It's easy to get hold of though.

Martin Miller's is pretty essy to get hold of and is nice - more orange peel than most so it lends itself to fruitier drinks.

Caorunn's my favourite - it's got green apple taste that I think works fantastically in a martini, G&T or Tom Collins. It's not quite as widespread as the above though.

Whereabouts are you, there may be a local option?

I'm in Doncaster, so no local options I'm aware of. Doing a Costco run in the morning though so will be over Sheffield way. Costco might have something he's not tried before.

Tears because someone had bought you mediocre rum? If that's your idea of aiming high, you're shooting low!

As above, Hendrick's and Chase are very good, and Bombay is a great fallback (Keeping it local!)

This is one of my favourites. Not fashionable or in a pretty bottle, just lovely gin;

Oh, and Fever Tree tonic, obviously.

Hendricks Gin is good, but getting very common
For my Dads birthday last year I went to the specialist at Harvey Nicholas and after half an hour of being talked through the different types and brands (didn't know there was that many)
In the end I got him some called The Botanist, its from island of Islay. He loved it.

Not sure where else you can get it from, sorry.

TASTING NOTES
The Botanist is a unique, limited edition gin produced on the island of Islay by Bruichladdich distillery. More well known for its excellent single malt whiskies, The Botanist Gin can be seen as a far cry to Bruichladdich’s other releases, yet applies a similar focus on complexity and regionality as its island counterparts. Of the 31 different botanicals used in the production, 22 are from Islay itself, including the juniper. These botanicals are added to a pot-still called ‘Ugly Betty’ and distilled in a process that takes around three times longer than the traditional gin production process. The resulting spirit is marked out by a seductive and complex fruit and spice character, which is smooth, mellow and pure.

don't buy Gordons - it's cooking gin

Hendricks, Bombay Sapphire, Tanquery etc

Even Aldi Gin is better than Gordon"s
Sip smiths is nice - but a little light
Tesco's down two own brand premium ones which are really good .

It's an official fact that The Botanist is the best gin bar none. Boe gin comes a close second though

Costco seem to have the Williams Chase Elegant in, if the store matches the website, and Tanqueray No10, so they are the front runners for now. Cheers all.

If you get Gordon's the be sure to get the export edition, completely differnt formulation and bottled at a higher ABV. I think Selfridges sell it. Hendricks and Bombay are gins for people who don't like gin.

A bunch of us middle class types had a gin tasting evening not long ago. Everyone brought one or two gins. Conclusions:
- Monkey 49 was the favourite but it's not cheap.
- Aldi was the runner up (they do, or did, two versions and the more "expensive" was the winner). It's amazing value.
- Hendricks was very nice with cucumber (yes really).
Personally I also really like Martin Miller which you can pick up in Madrid airport for about £14 a litre! However that's probably no help to you....
And whatever you do, don't buy Gordon's. It just says "I really couldn't be bothered and have given up on life".

Developed a bit of a gin thing last summer. Not tried the Botanist, will add it to the list. Two that haven't been recommended so far are Bloom, very floral, and Gin Mare, all mediterreany.

Botanist if you can find it locally, otherwise Hendricks is readily available.

I'm not a gin drinker, the odd one now and again, tried some Pickerings straight at a friends house, absolutely lovely. I may have to get some for myself!

I am currently working my way through a bottle of No. 3 London Gin which is very nice. As a bit of a gin drinker I would be happy with any of the premium brands as a present, always good to try something new or unusual. The only one I really haven't liked is some Heston Blumenthal mixture from Waitrose which was just a bit odd.

I think he meant he would cry with disappointment.

Go for a nice unusual bottle of gin. Hendricks, Plymouth, Bombay Sapphire & Tanquery are what I would buy for having in the cabinet for every day drinks. Something a bit fancier (start with the No 10 above) or something a bit special would be nice as a gift. Unless he just drinks gin to get pissed in which case a big bottle of supermarket gin!

Waitrose has a good selection of nice gins but a proper drink place would probably be better.

Sipsmith gin is the way to go.

Sipsmith Gin

Small batches made in a tiny 'lock-up' near Hammersmith.

First distillery in 200 years to be allowed to say it makes London Gin or something. It's incredibly smooth with zero burn.

(well is used to be made in a 'lock-up'. They seem to have got bigger...

As an alternative that hasn't been mentioned yet, Sacred Gin is very nice. Especially their Cardamon Gin

http://sacredspiritscompany.com

Very interesting how and where it is made.
