Yes I know, courses vary, conditions are different but I know some on here run cx races on ss bikes! What gearing do you run? I've just picked up a Pomp which is 42×16 – I was thinking 38×16 would be ok??

Not that I did any races on my Pomp but i used 38:16 for every day offroad use.

I have done couple of CX races with 39 x 18 gearing.

42×20 works for me on Scottish CX courses (42 used to convert it to a road fixed with a 16t cog on a flip flop hub). occasionally need a tooth or two more, but only at the start of races when i'm feeling frisky.

Thanks – so 42×20 is about 57 gear inches – roughly the same as 34×16 it seems. I think I'm going to have to give the first race a go and experiment.

what are your courses like? I don't race but ride a lot here in the FoD on going thats a lot steeper. Run 42/18 when out with the mates on mtb's or 42/18 if not pushing. I am not a strong rider by any means but can get up more on the SS rather than the mtb. Must admit I do find that the higher gears help my totally screwed knee
