MegaSack DRAW - 6pm Christmas Eve - LIVE on our YouTube Channel
i expect some of you will have had a letter through the post about this too, just wondered what the general concensus is.
apparently if i download the VM WiFi app, i can connect to nationwide VM wifi hotspots. they also want me to allow my Hub to become a hotspot too (on a separate connection or partition on my hub). sort of like a VM collective i spose, the more people do it the more available itll be for everyone else?
wifey says shes read that most people arent trusting VM and think their speeds will go down, so are refusing.
im also a little cynical altho am i right in thinking that i couldnt be taken advantage of by neighbours trying to get a freebie, as my Hub would only be available to account paying VM customers who have the app anyway?
if i say no to my Hub being used, would i then not have access to the app myself for airports, town centres, that sort of thing?
even if i do say yes, im on a quiet housing estate, cant see anyone really wanting to use wifi anywhere near my house.
whats yer thoughts?
Interesting... i've not had this letter yet. Will have to read up on it. Like you, quite fancy the idea of having wi-fi everywhere, not so keen on "sharing" my hub... but if its a "different partition" what's to stop Virgin enabling it anyway... without our knowledge?
Haven't BT being doing this for a while now? Haven't heard of any horror stories. I'm on Virgin but haven't had any letter, seems like a good idea as long as they don't increase prices.
Not had the letter, or email, yet. It's about time, tho. They were supposed to roll it out a couple of years back.
Tell your wife to stop reading internet alarmists. You're speed won't go down, there is provision for the service.
As mentioned, BT have been doing it for yonks.
haven't had a letter but downloaded the app some time ago.
Useful when you out and about to get a decent wifi connection.
no idea how the sharing of my hub works and who knows whats been going on, but we do use VM web safe on our hub so maybe that limits strangers only downloading safe stuff... no idea. On the other hand does it mean if my kids access another persons hub outside our home the parental control will be wide open ?
What about other folk abusing your connection?
What about other folk abusing your connection?
Pretty sure it would be throttled and monitored - you have to be signed in to use it.
Also on VM and not had a letter- sounds like the Thing BT rolled out years ago.
You can already get free wifi on the tube in London (without an app).
You're [sic 😉 ] speed won't go down, there is provision for the service.
Isn't contention the one thing that potentially does slow down your service?
Just in case anyone wants to know...
Then click 'My Profile'. and scroll down.
hmmm, thanks.
so they opt you IN without asking first. Nice.
The opt in by default is to make the service work generally isn't it?
It uses a 'spare' guest network on your router and does not affect the bandwidth you have available on your private connection. Nor does this community use count against your bandwidth usage.
Virgin currently sell some high bandwidth packages (VIVID 300 & VIVID 200 Gamer) and I suspect there's a bit of slack in the system beyond that. I suppose it's this 'slack' they're taking advantage of for the benefit of more customers.
Besides, your device will be identifiable on the network and it'll 'know' the locations you're accessing the community wifi in.
If you opt out you probably won't be able to benefit from the vm wifi connection elsewhere. You login to the app so it knows who you are, only vm customers can connect to it.
As said bt have done it for years...if you don't agree to the share of your wifi, you don't get to join the free WiFi elsewhere via the bt app.
If you opt out you probably won't be able to benefit from the vm wifi connection elsewhere
You can. See Jamie's screenshot.
Just signed up. My hub doesn't show on the local map, so maybe it's not yet enabled, or my router isn't compatible.
