Heloo, having trouble with sky internet at the moment, engineer coming out on Monday, but after a week with no internet at home its very frustrating. Ive got an older Linksys router, wag354g model and wondering if this would be ok to use instead of the supplied one. Reason being is that they keep saying ours is knackered and trying to sell us one for £70!! **** off I said to that… Anyway, want to test this Linksys but don’t know how to. Any ideas on setup mucho appreciated, cheers.

The problem you’ve got is that your ADSL username / password is hard-coded into the router, so just replacing it won’t work. You’ve two options here.

    1) you could add your Linksys behind the Sky router, leaving the Sky router to negotiate the credentials. However, in your case this isn’t going to help you.

    2) you can (on the older routers at least) extract the credentials from the router. Look on the skyuser forums, there’s a website where you enter the serial number and it’ll give you the details. Bear in mind that Sky do not support this configuration.

Reason being is that they keep saying ours is knackered and trying to sell us one for £70!!

Ring to cancel, when they ask why, tell them you don’t have a working router. They were giving them away free a couple of weeks ago.

I used this a while ago when my friend was advised by PC World that “yes, any old router will do, just plug it in mate” and he had no note of the Sky username/password for the dsl line.

It certainly worked- we got a working username and password into the router and the line up.

Have done this in the past, as above look at the forums [/url]for advice.

The cm9 site above is the one I was referring to.

Just been swapped over to Sky from O2 and I’m using my own router. Had to alter a few settings, details at if they’re of any help.

I’m running an ASUS router that supports the DHCP client ID option that Sky use with their MER encryption.

I just used wireshark to sniff the WAN port on router startup and you can find out what the DHCP option is, stick it into a merlin firmware or similar that supports it and hey presto all working.

Not sure if you could put DD-WRT or Merlin firmwares on your router?
