Will this just work as a plug and play device? My work laptop is locked, so I can't install any software, however, I can back up to USB sticks, would this work the same? Can I password protetct it?

You can run software off a USB stick/HDD – if you install the standalone versions of software like MSN messenger etc etc 🙂 YOu can't password protect it although you can get software to protect files by encrypting folers 🙂

It is possible lock a pc so external drives wont work but it is uncommon and if a usb stick works then this will, too. I picked mine up from Tesco, the play one looks ok, though.

Depending on how your work laptop is locked you may not be able to install programs on a USB drive, you may only be able to store files on it.
