We are redoing our kitchen floor and replacing it with quickstep click together LVT planks (1250 mm x 190 mm x 5mm). We have been told that we need 1 mm underlay but there seems to be a massive selection. It will be going onto a level chipboard floor and weren't planning on glueing it down.

Can anybody suggest what we need for home use (noise reduction, insulation, comfort, etc), what are useful "features" of an underlay and what is snake oil? Happy to take general recommendations or specific suggestions of products that work!

Looking online there is ~5x difference in price between things that outwardly claim to be the same thing....

Ta muchly,

S

I put down some B&Q click LVT tiles a few weeks back - the recommended underlay was a 1mm foil back cardboard type thing at £40 a pack. I had enough 3mm foam stuff left from another project and since we’d already overspent I was looking to save money where possible and use what I had. The 3mm foam ‘works’ for levelling/ insulation but I have found it gives a bit of bounce to the floor - it’s only the utility room so it doesn’t really matter, if it was a kitchen/hall/ living room it might be more annoying.
So atypically, I’m not recommending what I’ve got

6mm ply.

Used underlay in the kitchen and the bounce/flex is annoying.

Bathroom and hallway are done with ply and it's far better underfoot.

I just laid a quickstep 5mm LVT floor. Used the 2mm quickstep foam underlay over ply subfloor.

It does have a slight give under foot, but feels great. Would use it again no problems.

1mm dense foam. Do not go thicker as too much underlay and poor quality click can cause problems with breaking of the short ends.
