  • Tell me about over gloves – alternatives to PHEW LOBSTER OUTER SHELL GLOVES

    Hi,
has anyone found a good alternative to the rocking horse excrement PHEW – LOBSTER OUTER SHELL WINTER CYCLING GLOVES.
I contacted Phew in Feb 2019 and was told they’d get back to me when stock came in as they were changing factory, I just realised I am still waiting and the site shows only Small available.
    – seems like a great idea to me – they have perhaps underestimated interest!

    – longer version with a bit of explanation:-
    – I’d like have an over-glove to use over my “normal” late season glove [e.g. the lovely (discontinued) Royal Mercury or the Pearl Izumi Elite].
Meaning that when hands get too hot or cold it’s just a matter of slipping on or off an overglove (waterproof or windproof?).
It was out last week in just over 0 – and my Specialized (non lobster) ‘Element 1.5’ gloves were plenty warm with thin silk liners (although as you’d expect, felt a bit distanced from the bars for any tech riding).
The silk liners soon came off (probably only needed in proper cold) and after a 20 minute warm up the Specialized gloves alone felt pretty sweaty – I needed to go down a glove level.
Out came the old Pearl Izumi Pittards leather palm Elite gloves.

What would have been excellent was something like the Phew Lobster over glove to slip off/on.
I did call by to try on the Hunt Bikes Dissent133 layering system top layer gloves (thanks Al), but, although, I don’t have XL hands, the XL was too small for me with either their own “under” gloves or the Pearl ones beneath. Long fingers?

There has to be something out there doesn’t there?
Thanks all, I know I’l get some good advice here

    Mariner, Thanks,
I’ve got some of those Extremities (with the removable liners) but mittens are a right bigger to cycle in. Commute in Alaska, Iditabike? definitely. Frosty Brighton woods not so ideal, sadly, as they are bloody warm.

Those are both promising links, as are these
    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Revit-Spokane-H2O-Waterproof-Motorcycle-Over-Gloves-Overgloves-Rev-it-Revit/274279221841?hash=item3fdc50ca51:g:DOMAAOSw1T1eTmQD&var=574372981571
but, if possible I’d prefer the first (brake) finger to be separate, I know it’ll not be as warm, but it would allow much better control of the bike. I tried that style (proper ‘lobster’ 2 finger in each claw) with the old Trek and Pearl lobsters and it was like wearing over gloves trying to ride tech trails.

    grateful for the reply though

Firstly, thanks for the interest in the Phew gloves.

I won’t bore you with the story as to why we’ve not had any stock for so long, but the brand is now under new management and we’re in the process of sorting things out. Unfortunately this does mean we’re not going to have a proper drop of new stock until late summer/early autumn 2021 in time for next year’s UK winter season. There will be PLENTY of stock then though so unless we’re plunged into a new ice age we’re unlikely to run out of most items for at least the whole of next winter. We will also have a few new products ready by then which we’re in the process of developing and testing at the moment.

I’ve been rummaging through what is left of the current stock this evening and the status is…

Lobster – SMALL – IN STOCK
Early Winter – SMALL, LARGE and X-LARGE – IN STOCK

I have also managed to find 1 pair of size MEDIUM lobsters. As they’re not currently listed as in stock on the site, best to contact us here with your details and we can sort the order out for you offline…

    http://www.phew.cc/contact

First come first serve on those. If you would like to be added to the mailing list so we can let you know when 2021 stock arrives, then use the same contact page and we’ll get on it. We really will contact you this time.

    Hope this helps

I read that as oven gloves, then thought joy division… I’m going to bed now.

I’ve been down that road myself and now use various combinations according to the weather.  Dissent123 being gloves not mitts/lobsters are only good down to 5 degrees or so. + despite skinny hands/fingers I had to go with the largest Dissents to get the finger length although curiously the thumb is still a bit tight circumference-wise so gets cold.  Aldi lobsters or even a pair of Reusch skiing trigger finger mitts for really cold conditions and also have the tuff-bags in a pocket or bag as an extra layer just in case it really starts to pour but like you say they aren’t great for cycling.

One thing I haven’t tried are those german / french army ‘trigger finger’ overmitts.  They look a bit bulky but do appear to be roughly what you might be looking for.

Do report back if you get a pair.

    Hi chaos,
thanks for searching, nice idea those army ‘trigger finger’ over mitt ones, but not sure they’ll work – The 3 “non trigger” fingers will be round the grip, so I’m thinking that the ability to also have the trigger finger on the brake would be limited – because the “mitten” part would want all the fingers to form a fist?
I’ve ordered them to try anyway £9.99, hey. They’ll do for something

I use 5mm pre-curved neoprene gloves. Like the ones used for kayaking/surfing. Warm down to about +5C.

Thx all, looks like I am waiting for Phew to bring back their lobster variant late this year, fingers crossed. I’ll report back on the

german / french army ‘trigger finger’ overmitts.

Hi all the German / French gauntlets https://www.ebay.co.uk/c/913139657 are amazing value for money, but not what I had in mind for cycling, they have a nice warm pile lining (so are not over gloves) and the “trigger” finger isn’t lined at all but would be too tight for a regular glove to go underneath. Ah well.

Looks like Phew have had a name change or even given up. Shame as their lobster looked the best I’ve seen.
Any alternative “lobster” overgloves out there? Seems ideal to put a wind proof thin layer I der “normal“ gloves.

Not tried them but know a few people who rate the planetx crab gloves for budget warmth. Not really an overglove but might do the job.

I had some P-X crab gloves but couldn’t get on with the pad (or might have been lack of pad), so in the end I cunningly took some scissors to them and carefully removed everything except the very outer shell. I was left with pretty much what I think you’re after – a windproof overglove which worked brilliantly over ‘normal’ gloves.

    For fifteen quid it’s worth a go…

I just use skiing/ mountaineering shell gloves if it’s going to be fairly chilly and wet. The best were TNF but they’re about 30 years old and leak.

Got some Mountain Hardwear ones similar share to these but with a fleece shell which I never use

    https://www.mountainhardwear.com/p/mens-high-exposure-mens-gore-tex-glove-1912781.html?dwvar_1912781_color=233

Also got some OR ones like these

    https://www.outdoorresearch.com/us/shop/mens-adrenaline-3-in-1-gloves-300019

Again I rarely use the fleece liner.

If its really dicey conditions, ie near zero but with lots of wet about then I’d take both pairs to use after the first wets out, but only with trepidation as those sort of weather conditions are deadly for doing risk sports.

Decathlon do a waterproof lobster shell* glove.

*if that’s not already trademarked for these gloves, it should be.

Obviously not clear in a photo, but it’s just a waterproof/breathable shell that you pull over your chose gloves.

thanks, ordered some will provide feedback, that’s just what I was after.
    did you try them?

Decathlon also have some bargain cold weather bike gloves – however I know that sometimes it’s worth thoiling something more expensive (like Goretex coats)
