Looks ideally located for biking out of the door. What about the other trivial stuff like housing, schools and keeping kids entertained and out of bother?

We've heard that we should steer of anything near the Cutpurse Road estate. House prices seem to back this up to an extent....any real life experiences?

I loved living in that area, moved away now but not far still love going back to see my parents/friends good schools, lots to do and you can get an awful lot of house for your money. Where are you thinking of moving to?

Not entirely sure yet. I work in Barnie which we think probably would be a bit parochial. Darlington is too flat. Richmond seems to combine amenities, decent schools and hills. Just don't know much about living there full time with a young family. We probably want to be within a mile of the town centre. Preferably North for access to the A66. Other than that, no ideas really.

Lived just outside richmond for over 40 years - MTB I the area is outstanding, the schools all used to be great but the comprehensive has ha some troubles (we have had four kids go to school in richmond) there are a few decent restaurants and pubs. In respect to kids the station cinema is good, lots of new sports facilities at the nearby garrison, lots of new shops also. Richmond has an annual music event which is pretty good.

House prices in my opinion are very high in richmond probably due to not much stock.

The villages have lots of cheap houses - access to A66 and A1 are both good,

I worked at Barnard Castle for 12 years (GSK) and Richmond has more to offer

Old man - that's really useful, cheers! Will have a look at outlying villages too!

Enduro - care to elaborate?! Wasn't looking at estate itself, but there are one or two new developments at the top of the roads which offer good value. Is the estate so bad that you wouldn't live next to it?!

I personally wouldn't live there, used to deliver pizzas up there years ago always unsavoury types hanging around on the streets. The only place in richmond where I would lock the car when delivering. Rest of richmond is very nice just expensive to buy property. Lots of nice walks and some good riding if you know where to go and also not far from the dales for endless trails

Richmond is right enough but very expensive for what it is imo. Saying that, at least it's not Northallerton. ๐Ÿ˜‰

My choice up that way would be something like Reeth/Leyburn/Masham/Bedale etc. Reeth is especially good for rides from your door.

Not sure that I'd like a Richmond to Barney commute in the winter.

Scorton village has a shop, two pubs, a garage, primary school, nursery, doctors surgery and has a lot of village events is on a bush route and handy for A1 - but it's a village and parochial

Others worth considering are middleton tyas, and barton

I always preferred Barney to Richmond tbh. But then again I lived in upper teesdale at the time so Richmond probably seemed like a terrifying metropolis.

By that point you're pretty much in Darlington, so might as well go the whole hog and have access to decent shops, pubs and (soon) multiplex?

I mtb around scorton, middleton tyas, barton, aldbrough at john and there is a surprising amount of good bridleways and some singletrack - not demanding but really good summer evening riding

Sloans is good, too, and I'm hearing good things about the new Hole In The Wall.

Ha, been to Bar 22 with the work crowd. Nice pint there. Sadly, pubs less of priority than kids schooling and biking!

I love living in Richmond, I'm lucky enough to work all over Richmondshire.
That area of Cutperse is nice.

Ive lived in the town or the surrounding villages for the last 8 years, the missus and her family most of their lives. Its alright is the best i'll say. Towns such as Northallerton, Ripon, Harrogate, Stokesley and Yarm and far, far nicer. Theres really sod all in the town itself apart from the Castle, which i'll admit is great (though once you've been, you've been if you get what I mean), and the houses around it are fab. If you like shopping, forget it, Charity shops and Pound Shops are your lot. The remainder of the town is made up of shitty 1970s style houses that look bloody terrible, IMHO. Richmond School is having a shocking time of it, luckily my kids go to the towns Catholic School, which is right up there with the best of them as far as exam results go.
The town is relatively crime free, and there are plenty of pubs, and a good, if small, Cinema-cum-Restaurant converted from an old train station, which is about the highlight of the town. The River Swale is a nice feature too for walks. An excellent bike shop nearby in Catterick (Bikanic).
As for biking, road biking is excellent, the Dales roads are on the doorstep, and the Pennines to the North. For mountainbiking, its garbage until you get to Reeth..there are tracks and bridleways closer, but are either bogfests or just plain dull. The North York Moors are about 40 minutes drive away, and its where I go for the majority of my mountain biking (along with Hamsterley)..loads of singletrack compared to the mainly double track of the Dales, just personal preference.
Cutpurse..hah, yes its a tip...by market town standards, otherwise it isn't all that bad if compared to City housing estates. House prices in the town are very average, but again the curse of the 70s style hideous housing rears it ugly head..actual nice looking properties are few and far between. The guys who planned the town the town in the last 3-4 decades want a kick up the arse IMO as it looks bloody awful!
The surrounding villages can be nice..i live just to the North these days, halfway between Richmond and Barnard Castle, and the villages such as Middleton Tyas and Scorton, the Cowtons are really nice.
I think it says it all that I would move tomorrow to any of the towns above given the chance by the missus, especially Stokesley for the Mountain Biking, or Harrogate for the shops and nightlife, but she wont!
