Looking for some new footwear for the road bike. Must be SPD compatible. Currently wearing winter boots or soft touring style shoes. Want something ‘fast’. Stiff. Nice solid fitting.

No shops seem to list by cleat type, so it’s difficult to search for road specific SPD shoes… They don’t actually need to be road specific. Just looking for something that isn’t out of place on a fast road ride. Cheap preferably.

Shimano RT82s will probably fit the bill. Or Northwave Fondo SRS if you want more tread on the sole.

Specialized RBX shoes would also work.

Sidi Genius 5 got mine fairly cheap on CRC about a year ago.

Planet-x have a shoe atm with both a spd and a 3-point drilling, 50 quid IIRC. Not a carbon sole, but a composite that will prob be stiff enough.

dhb (wiggle) did a carbon-soled MTB spd shoe that was pretty cheap, but it seems to have been discontinued.

I have a pair of Mavic Cyclo Tour Sport which are reasonably stiff and fit your spec for SPD fitting. If you buy go up at least a size, maybe a size and a half.

CRC are knocking out some in their clearance but only a few sizes available. Start Cycles appear to have quite a few different sizes in stock but are looking for £60 which is still a bargain compared to retail.

Not a bad shoe and quite easy to walk without damaging the cleat. Look quite roadie, too, if that’s your thing.

Not a carbon sole but I don’t notice the difference. I had the old DHB carbon soled ones and they were very stiff but I found I got sore feet a lot.

I’ve found them very comfortable

These Giros are also really easy to walk around in happily walked between a restaurant and into the cinema at a retail park at the weekend

A little pricey but I got them sent over from the states for about £45 all in though think that was a fluke

Thanks for the recommendations. Lots of different options. Might have to just get myself round some shops and take a look, try them on.

How about these, which I use on the gnarmac bike.

Basically the same shoe as these;

With some grips on the soles and a little toe box bumper. Crucially though, the sole unit is the same. Stiffer than Binners after someone slipped three viagra in to his steak bake.

Much as I hate to say it, Evans have updated their website and one of the filter categories is “cleat compatibility”. I was looking at the same thing today!

Those specialized look spot on. Bit pricey though. I’ll be murdered if I drop £150 on a pair of shoes.

Laces are better – tighten around your foot in more places so are more comfortable

I recently got some of those 2015 s works shoes – ace – look like road shoes too. stiff as they come. evans had them for £150 a while ago.

I went for Giro Privateers in white for road use. Stiff enough sole, and (for my money) aesthetically compatible with a road bike… You can get the black ones for £60, I think.
