I move office soon, much more cycle friendly location.
Easy ride there on un-maintained Glen road, possibly off road on a dry day.
We have cycle to work scheme, function over bling to keep cost down.
I can't seem to get past a Pinnacle Lithium with full guards and rack....

So, inspire me with yours....CX? Flat bar road? Rigid MTB on slicks?

This is my commuter used only for commuting and my most ridden bike last year:

[img] [/img]

I have to ride the forks locked out because the spring is too soft for my weight, so it's effectively fully rigid with no weight saving benefit.

I went down the rigid (& SS) MTB on slicks route.

Been using a Bfe with 1x9 gearing, hans dampf tyres, 150mm Sektors for last few months. It can be a pain, but when I extend my commute home (every day shift), My route is about 60% off road.

Plus I find MTBs are comfier.

The frankenbastard built from bits from classifieds. 4000 miles commuting on it last year fitted with big Apple slicks.

Frame was new (a few years ago) other parts from eBay & old bikes (saddle's off a tourer bought c.1984). Only ridden on road into central London.

Old Kona converted to commuting and load lugging.

It's surprisingly nippy when not loaded up and capable on road and off, very comfy and for hauling things round town and anything < 30 miles it's great!

[img] [/img]

I was (and still am sometimes) using a Specialized Langster for commute duties but lack of clearance for guards, and poor load carrying means it's seen a lot less use this year.

Not really "budget", although I did originally manage to sneak it in under the £1,000 for C2W, thanks to some parts bin raiding and an understanding shoppe.

2.1 semi slicks, salsa cowbell bars, 1x10 clutchy mech
[img] [/img]

35c slicks, sks cromoplastics, midge bars, 1x9 with pauls chainkeeper and normal mech

I use a charge cooker 29er, shwlable big apples. I also took the crap and heavy coil fork off and put a steel one on. Offroad commutes I just change the tyres. Also gone full outer cables since this pic.

perhaps a roadrat with an alfine from cotic for £969 if that isn't too bling?

fine for tarmac and rough road commuting but really lively to ride offroad too. at its best for snatched singletrack on sunny days with 38c small block 8s.

I've got a Cannondale bad boy thing, it's awful! One of these -

[img] [/img]

It's the longest, stiffest, heaviest pile of black aluminium ever invented! After 4 winters is quite rusty now and needs some money spending on it... maybe time for an upgrade.

Surprising to see the numbers of bikes with the saddle canted forwards - that must throw all the weight painfully onto the hands.

Orange Clockwork. Cracking bike, popped some mudguards and a pair of (almost) slicks on it and it flies on the commute! Bought on here in the summer. Cost less than £200 with new wheels, brake pads, tyres and cabling, but I'm really attached to it.

Oh, and I hope I've upset someone by running bar ends on a riser bar! 😆

I would go with an arkose or similar, a cross bike will go great on the unmaintained roads and when you hit tarmac bits it won't feel like a lumpy old dog - it'd handle the fully off-road summer bit as well if you're up for it 🙂

On-one rigid 29er, carbon fork, 3x9, discs, flat bar with ends and a flipped stem for road miles. Will happily take big tyres. Light wheels and 25mm slicks for long sportives; fit with 35mm semis for everything else in between. Sorry, nae piccies.

I would have thought the lithium was a good bet on paper

The Ridgeback Advance is a similar thing if your cycle to work can't do Evans

For those with Big Apple tyres, what sort of pressure do you run?

I find around 22 psi on the front and 27 on the back gives a nice ride.

Hypnotoad, about the same here. I've got the fat franks on at the moment, which are the same tyre bar tread and colour. But mine are more like "R: a bit less than 30; F: a bit less than that."

For a commuter, is it worth splashing out on more than Altus level?
Struggling (apart from better wheels/weight) to get past the cheaper geared bikes...

My fortitude with spikes on. Use a crossmark and a small bock 8 in less icy conditions, but I do have off road options on my commute.

My 853 Inbred. The best, most versatile bike I've ever owned, and one I'll never, ever sell.
Pic shows it in touring mode, but commuting was the same thing really, just no barbag and only the trailer when we went shopping.
It's been retired from commuting duties now for 2 reasons - My commute is too long and commuting also means shopping..... I can't afford to get it nicked so I don't like leaving it locked up outside Tesco. I've got a CdF for that now.
