Hi STW,
Is there much difference in performance/functionality between the two? Is the nexus hub ideal for MTB duties or more for commuting?

Anything I should be aware of with Nexus 7spd hubs? Can I use a regular XT shifter or the specific nexus/Afine unit?

Many thanks, JT

you mean alfine v rohloff?

the nexus seals are not for mtb - basically the alfine is a beefed up nexus.
the alfine is 1/2 pound lighter than the rohloff, costs a third of the price and has 8 gears v 14.

at present you have to use the alfine specific shifter, which is still better than the twist grip for rohloff.

ive been running my alfine for a year with no probs.

Much as I think the Rohloff is too expensive, I also think the Alfine is too cheap, or will be very expensive to maintian IMHO

G'day jontawn, bin looking at internal hubs to.

The alfine's 8 speed disk bolt up hub,1825g,307% variation(1x9)

rohloff,14speed 519% (27speed system)qr hub.

rohloff's about x4 the cost of alfine & at least 2/3 times better IMHO,

you also need to use the alfine trigger shifter.

Rohloff on 2 bikes here & it only just has enough high to low gear range for me - the alfine nexus is much less & would not be anywhere near enough for what I need.
It has been very reliable & the twist sifter is OK after getting used to it.

Thanks for the swift replies!

My intentions were for the hub to be used on a commuter bike, so minimal fuss required!

The hub and shifter are free (I'm at a friends in Holland).... I'd quite like a rohloff, but not sure whether the circa 1k price tag can be justified!?

Alfine is made for commuting so grab it!

you will need a chain tensioner if you don't have horizontal drop-outs or

eccentric bb.

A rohloff would be total overkill for a commuting-only bike - unless you have a big pot of money that you are desperate to get rid of ๐Ÿ˜‰
