Haven't seen this thread for a while, so who's a believer?*

*if trying to justify it please don't use the road rash, increases aerodynamics or easier for my soigneur to rub me down as excuses

now that's freaky. Have to admit i'm tempted to do the legs, prob because i've been on the road bike exclusively and along to a couple of tri races but the hairy t shirt will be even more pronounced, my legs look like twigs anyway and i'm whiter than casper the ghost 🙁

I do. Mud cleans off easier, leg massages are much nicer 🙂

Well I'm far too good* to crash and suffer road rash so for me it's all about increasing aerodynamics and it's easier for my soigneur to rub me down. 😉

* this may not be true

Never under any circumstances. A man with bald legs just isn't right.

There is no rational justification other than "I want to".
Unless you can't stand the ribbing on the start line.
Yes...yes I do.

don't care if it makes you go faster, shaven legs on men = yuck (well almost all the time!)

It's harder for ticks to get hold of a shaved leg.

I always shave my legs in summer.

furry legs and lycra look awful so I shave my legs and it does make it easier when I stitch myself back up following the odd owie as well.

(I can't see the point of bothering A&E when I can do a passable a job myself and chicks dig scars)

eplitor jobbo thingies can tweak a bit but do give the best finish and it lasts very well. They also make my weekend entertainment role as Ruby the drag queen that bit easier

The unasked/unanswered question is this...

Where do you stop when you shave your legs?

For the record I not a leg shaver.

Shave to about 2 inches above the tan lines. Clippers above that point to get a nice blend.

maybe not shaving and dealing with the huge amount of drag will make you a better rider in the long run? i mean surely two hairy legs equates to like, a whole parachute attached to your back. you do the maths.

http://www.velominati.com/blog/the-rules/

Rule 4:
Legs shall be SHAVED year-round. ABSOLUTELY NO EXCEPTIONS. Certain hair removal creams are endorsed only on a case-by-case basis. One shall never show up to a race (be it large or small) with ANY amount of stubble visible on one’s legs.

Rule 33:
Legs are to be carefully shaved at all times. If, for some reason, your legs are to be left hairy, make sure you can dish out plenty of hurt to shaved riders, or be considered a hippie douche on their way

😀

Shaved and oiled for summer road.
Shaved and heat cream for winter cross.

Just like to keep em clean and tidy. Plus I do look like I'm wearing some Saxons trousers under my lycra if I don't shave them.

I don't see why anyone other than a pro or top level cat1 or elite rider needs to shave their legs. It really is not a nice sight lining up next to a male in his mid 40s with a bit of a belly and legs smoother than my mrs, at a local race. If I fall cuts and rash will get better hair or no hair and I am not in the fortunate situation where I get oiled up and rubbed down every night. (well except on a saturday night.) It is pure vanity at most levels of riding other than those that get paid to do it!

It's nothing to do with drag, negligible resistance in air. Swimmers on the other hand do shave for that purpose.

[s]Seriously; if you're a man who shaves the hair off his legs for reasons of (non professional) cycling then you have grandeur issues.

I don't see why anyone other than a pro or top level or elite rider needs carbon components and top quality suspension. It really is not a nice sight lining up next to a male in his mid 40s with a bit of a belly, and a bike better than a sponsored rider at the local trails.

Fair comment
In addition to the above; seeing pasty White noodle armed middle agers in skin tight clothing with bald legs riding £4k carbon exotica thinking they're going really really fast is equally distasteful IMO.

I haven't myself since November, but the others do without fail. I'll probably start again hen it's too dark to get out on the road. Have you ridden with us?

Girls love it.

Stop laughing. It's true.

Also way more comfortable on the bike - and not just in lycra, but also with armour and pads. Also you get a more even tan (apparently (I heard this once (I think..))).

And mud/oil/sweat/general crap does come off so much easier. Looks better as well.

Real men have hairy legs and hairy bollocks.

No ifs, buts or maybes.

And mud/oil/sweat/general crap does come off so much easier

I am speechless with contempt at this statement, it sums up the real reason why some cyclists shave their legs better than I ever could. 😆

If you just ride a MTB then fair enough, but if you ride a road bike in lycra, it just looks wrong if you don't shave.

I can. Off my legs, not yours.

I mean, it came off eventually but it was painful.

Winter - nope I leave them hairy
Spring - if I wear 3/4's then nope I'll leave them hairy
Summer - if I've a tan building and I'm in short bibs then yes I'll shave
Autumn - tanned/shaved legs and bibs deffo

Now't to do with massage (though it is way easier) I just like the look and feel.
And I ride 29erSS and Roadie.

I thought some joker had swapped my chamois cream for immac, I then found out I had alopecia, so this year I'm experimenting shaving the hairy bits that are left, like the look and the feel but it's a pain

I'm tempted, it's a cyclist thing innit. Plus mud splattered hairy legs look wierd, specially if it's proper muddy and you end up with lumps of mud hanging off your leg hairs, very unsightly 😯 Trouble is where do you stop? Do the leg shavers here shave their arms too? No point me having smooth legs and gorrilla arms is there? where does it end?

A few years ago at Mountain Mayhem, one of our more -roadie-orientated team-mates had shaved legs so naturally we all took the piss. Until it chucked it down and he managed to clean the mud off his legs with a wet towel while we were all scrubbing away at mud-encrusted hair. 🙁

Hairy legs are just about OK if you're the baggy short type, but a NO NO with lycra. Just wrong. No argument.

That said, my worst cycling related injury came from shaving my legs. I ended up hospitalised on an antibiotic drip for three days. Not so cool.

I now pluck with one of those Braun things. Don't be fooled by adverts with women smiling in the shower effortlessly plucking their legs. It's an absolute sod the first time you use one, but for long lasting hair removal you can't beat it.

That doesn't sound like a cycling related injury, more like an idiot related injury. What did you do?? 😀

Shaved my legs this morning, and I was in a bit of a rush to get out on the bike, and cut myself a couple of times (idiot). Turns out my sun tan lotion is alcohol based, legs were on fire for a good 10 minutes.

Doing a charity road ride on Saturday...I'll be shaving my legs - how far up do you go? Mid thigh? Stomach? Chin? - I'm doing it for a laugh and don't intend shaving them again for a good few years.

start at my toes and finish at my chin 🙂

TBH, i find it looks a lot better in lycra esp on road bike when hairy legs n lycra is a no no. After a while of doing it, it justs becomes the norm and you get used to it. It feels quite nice as well

Be prepared though, first few times of doing it you will itch like mad, as in not being able to sleep itch

Perhaps idiocy. I had a small haematoma on my shin from a pedal knock. When I shaved my leg I must have nicked a folicle just on top of the haematoma. Turns out small warm static pockets of blood are the perfect breeding grounds for germs. Anyway a day later my leg was twice its normal size with an abscess the size of a cricket ball sticking out the front of it. I was feverish. My leg was HOT. NHS Direct - straight to hospital. Septicaemia. No laughing matter.

I've finally succumbed now that I'm more a roadie than a mtber. Hairy legs and lycra is ugly. I tried a epilator, don't recommend it as it isn't comfortable and doesn't work as well as I hoped - hairs often break rather than pull out.

Surely its purely and simply to make them look bigger, more defined and thus intimidating? Adds an inch elsewhere if you know what I mean 😉

Obviously having regular massages would make a difference but unless you are that level then whatever...

Have yet to give in, even though I'm 98% roadie.

Partly because Mrs North has threatned the withdrawal of privileges if I do. And partly because, well, with legs as hairy as mine I've yet to work out where to stop.

Oh, and being laughed at for having hairy legs is the least of my worries on the bike.

It is hair sticking through lycra shorts that really gets me; not nice. Therefore a nice waxing sorts it out. After that a bit of epilator maintainence and you are sorted.

It looks much better in lycra..
