Will be moving into the Bromsgrove area soon and I’m wondering what local routes are available?

I’m aware of Lickey Hills and Clent, but have been told that the riding is limited there. Looking at the map Chaddesley Woods looks promising. Opinions?

    Cheers

Plenty of bridleways etc around to link up trails

I’ve not ridden in Chaddesley woods, I asked the same question a few years ago and was warned off it as a mud bath so have never bothered.

Mick Arms and rocketdog will be along shortly to give advice

I wouldn’t say Clent and the Lickeys are limited. Think the Lickeys are RocketDogs area- pretty sure they did a feature on them in the mag not too long ago. Never ridden in chaddesley despite it being very close- I’m not sure if they’ve got a ‘no cycling’ policy over there though

You have the NW Alps on your doorstep and loads of back lanes/ canal towpaths to stay away from the traffic if that’s your thing. As already said rocketdog will be along shortly who is the main man for the area 😉

Issue 83 I think we were featured in. Went to chaddesley woods once whilst passing & was put off by the ammount of mud, how flat it seemed & the no cycling signs. There’s enough riding for a 3 hour poodle in lickey/waseley area if you link via quiet roads & don’t mind cheeky trails
FB group:search NWAlps cycling or tweet me @_rocketdog_

    Nice one

Wyre forest as said is ace, but the best bits are axle deep mud atm

    Thanks for the replies guys.

Will check out Lickey/Waseley area and the FB group (cheers RocketDog).

I was hoping to find routes that I could do from the doorstep rather than driving. I’ve not had that where I currently live, having to drive at least half an hour first, so am looking forward to the opportunity to just nip out when I feel like it.

It’s pretty easy to ride up to the Lickeys from bromsgrove on back roads and footpaths. Riding area is limited but there’s still enough up there to kill an hour or two. Me and Mick have ridden off-road over to the Wyre but it was a 60+ mile ride and a bit of an all dayer.

There is a good off-road route up over the Lickeys to Clent and back which I’ve done with Mic Arms a few times.
Finally, there’s easy access to the canal network which can take you up into Brum or down to Worcs. I’ve down Stratford once but again, that was 60/70 miles and a full day ride.

Me and Mic both live in Bromsgrove.

are you moving to Bromsgrove or to somewhere outside it that everyone calls Bromsgrove?

If its stoke prior way you can ride to hanbury woods and muck about up there for a bit.

We’ll be moving to Bromsgrove itself or Catshill. It’s all slightly flexible at the moment as we’re still looking for a house, having sold ours and moving into rented for a bit while we look to buy.

Catshill is nearer Lickey, Waseley & Clent but there’s only a couple of miles in it

Chaddesley wood area is definitely cheeky, but there is some tasty singletrack tucked away – wait til May when the Bluebells come out, it’s beautiful up there (best bit is called (I think) High Wood on OS). Look for the Bridleway off woodcote lane heading toward Fairfield and follow your nose. It makes for a decent off-road link to Clent, but no fun in winter.

If you’re wondering about places to go further a field,

Cannock Chase is about an hours drive north and Forest of Dean is about an hours drive heading southish. (guessing you might know that already!)

Also plenty over at Wyre Forest area, group on Facebook (Wyre Forest MTB Trails) who can show you around. Quite a few seem to be from Kidderminster way. Also worth checking out on Facebook “Overspoke Bikes” these guys do rides quite often from the shop, just outside Kiddy.

I’ve seen riders over Clent and Kniver but never ridden it myself.

I’ve moved just north of the peaks but I used to frequent many places around the midlands. There’s lot to do, its just finding it!

I used to live it Catchal. Make sure you have your bike(s) insured. Some bits are much nicer than others though.

Waves from the back…drop us an email when you are settled. Might actually mean me dragging my arse out on the bike though…

Yep, the bikes are always insured, been bitten before.

I live Wolerhampton way at the moment. The Chase has been my regular haunt for many years, and I’ll still ride there, but work forces the move further South.

I’ve been looking on the OS maps and there are plenty of footpaths and bridal ways around Bromsgrove, heading out towards Chaddesly/Wyre and the other way towards Lickey etc, will have to have an explore.

We should have moved within the month so if anyone fancies getting together for a local ride when we’re in the area then PM me. It’s always good to meet new riders 🙂

    Cheers for the tips everyone.

    Edit:

Just seen your post MicArms. Will do. My email is in profile btw.

    @DonkeyDave

My addy is in my profile if you want to get in touch, although obviously it’ll be a few weeks before I can make it.

I’ve just seen your posts on the other thread. If you get a ride together would be interested in tagging along in the future.
