dumbass question.
For a given length of rivet (say 3.2mm x 8mm) how far clear of the outer face of the material Im riveting does the pin head have to go for it to work?

I have 2x 3mm plate I want to rivet together.
Ta

It depends on the size (diameter) of the rivet.

Used to love doing the riveting stuff when at school/tech college. Getting a nice rounded head using the hammer was a bit of art 😯

OK, looks like Im trying to find the "grip range".

Any idea how to find a schedule of grip ranges for certain blind rivets.

These are some on eBay:
4.8mm 12.7mm
4.8mm 8.0mm
4.0mm 5.5mm
3.2mm 16mm
3.2mm 10mm
3.2mm 8.0mm
3.2mm 5.5mm

1.5mm x shank of the rivet seems to ring in my head for some reason.

Disclaimer, I may be way off.

rivet length - 1/8" sound reasonable?

1.5mm x shank of the rivet

Obviously I mean 1.5 x shank!

So a 4mm diameter rivet is going to need an extra 6mm length through the plate. In practice. I had a load of rivets in my rivet gun box and used whatever was available!

Make sure they are sealed rivets if you don,t want holes in whatever it is your punching rivets into.
I have 5000 rivets sized for a motorcycle exhaust but found out they weren,t sealed in the end not bad £12 wasted! 🙁
The real deal ones cost £1.65 each 😮

I've just looked it up in a book I still have from my apprenticeship (Chapman's Workshop Technology part 1, 1972) and it concurs, one and a half times the diameter of the rivet.

My Dad used to sell rivets for a living.
Best use we found was an endless supply of tips for dutch arrows.

😳

Thanks, but went with nuts and bolts in the end, a bit of threadlock and a bit of superglue on the ends. Should hold 😉
