I don't if many folks here have been following this but I'm sure there's a few who will be interested to know about Stephen Pyke's attempt at the fastest round of the Munros. He's doing this completely under his own power, using bike and kayak to link up the mountains. The record is 44 days, he has set a target of 40 – and he's almost there now.

He has had some astonishingly challenging days.

    There is a blog:

and you can see his his progress on the map here:

    Been watching it.

Quite admire the spirit of the existing record holder mind you ( swimming to and from Skye, stopping for beer etc)

Years ago I read Martin Morans book about the first completion of the Munros in winter .It opens your eyes as to how harsh the weather can get in Britain

A class mate of mine is setting out to have a crack at beating that new record, if it is set, in two weeks time. She is mental.

Cool. Would the old record have been set back when there were more official munros?

22 years and still counting for me. I really must arrange a visit to Skye this summer.

There were 284 in total in 2000 when the current* record was set.

There are now 283 since the demotion of Sgurr Nan Ceannaichean which could easily have been linked in on day 34 of his schedule.

In fact it makes sense to head over it from the ridge from Moruisg to get down to Achnashellach on good LRT.

Makes my eight years look a bit pedestrian.

Martin Moran recommended reading for anyone interested in munros etc.
