Rarely watch much but do enjoy a good film that moves or inspires me .one that comes to mind from way back was the elephant man . just wondered if you had any suggestions .
thanks in advance
Bill
17 again with Zac Efron. It made me cry.
Forrest Gump.
I've watched it 3 times, all after finishing a long set of night shifts, and it makes me weep like a baby.
Precious
The diving bell and the butterfly. Bout a French man who suffers a stroke and dictates a book by blinking. Really amazing film.
It's a Wonderful Life.
😥 and then 😀
ET
The way
Any Given Sunday.
the lives of others
I watched Shine for the first time a few months ago. Well worth a watch.
Films I find moving or inspirational in no particular order -
Up
Dead Poet Society
The Shawshank Redemption
Stand by Me
Fight Club
"You buy furniture. You tell yourself, this is the last sofa I will ever need in my life. Buy the sofa, then for a couple years you're satisfied that no matter what goes wrong, at least you've got your sofa issue handled. Then the right set of dishes. Then the perfect bed. The drapes. The rug. Then you're trapped in your lovely nest, and the things you used to own, now they own you"
The Champ
I watched The Light Thief the other night - moving but not the most uplifting film.

Seven Pounds

Life is sweet
Hear my song.
A matter of life and death.
The red shoes.
Whale Rider
The Iron Giant
Champ

The diving bell and the butterfly.
Paris.

Life is beautiful
Stuart - A life backwards
What's eating Gilbert grape?
Friday Night Lights
Another vote for Up, weirdly good film.
If you want moving, try Requiem For A Dream, The Wrestler, Pi, Black Swan. They will all move you to somewhere you don't want to be mind.
Also Lost In Translation. Another oddly good film.
Garden State isn't too bad, Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind is interesting, World's Greatest Dad, Shawshank Redemption (obviously).
For me touching the void and the beckoning silence
Well most of my suggestions are gone!
Seven Pounds deserves to be more well known that it is, great film. +1 for Forrest Gump, Eternal Sunshine and Shawshank.
The Pursuit of Happyness is worth a watch. Pay it Forward is good.
Into the wild -end of thread
Wow,
life is sweet, dead poets, iron giant,
films i haven't seen in years but are wonderful.
Read the diving bell and the butterfly, very moving book.
Atonement, Dr Zhivago
another vote here for up, surprisingly adult theme (not that way) but also genuinely funny in bits too.
Dead Poets and Shawshank as already mentioned but one for me - Grapes of Wrath.
Toy Story 2
the crow (made poignant by the fact that brandon lee was killed during the making of the film) R.I.P brandon 🙁
trickydisco; The beckoning silence just made my xmas list. Read the book and The White Spider but didn't even know a film had been made.
another vote here for up, surprisingly adult theme (not that way) but also genuinely funny in bits too.
Squirrel?!
John Lewis christmas advert.. everything else is suddenly redundant
Zeitgeist 🙂
Seven pounds is good. Didn't think Will Smith had the range.
+1 for "Life Is Beautiful". No other film made me both laugh and cry in the same (large) measure.
Birthright, great short.
Spirited Away maybe. Garden State and 7 Pounds we've had... The Land Before Time!
some beautiful suggestions so far, as above i was hugely impressed by will smith in seven pounds and the pursuit of happines.
some suggestions i haven't noticed come up yet:
'finding neverland' (its the bit on the park bench at the end)
marley and me (its the bit where marley puts his head on jennifer whatherface's lap after seeing the doctor)
pretty much any pixar film
the notebook (i know its a romance... but if you love anybody as much as ryan goslings character then its pretty intense)
The Husucker Proxy - great movie, funny, moving, genuinely one of my favourites.
+1 for Pay It Forward and It's a Wonderful Life.
Senna
The flying Scotsman
Pay it forward
Two Lane Blacktop is ace, it's even got Harry Dean Stanton in it and everyone knows that he's the best actor ever.
Which leads me nicely on to my rec
The Straight Story
PSA on the hudsucker proxy.... 3quid in HMV at the moment on DVD 😀
Come & See.
no sound on the trailer - but it's a russian take on german occupation
of belarussia (spelling?) during WW2. Genuinely frightening.
the green mile is pretty good, even if it is written by Stephen king ans has tom Hanks in it.
The Green Mile's a proper mission though!
A Beautiful Mind
Definitely agree with Up, I shed a (tiny) manly tear at the montage in the beginning. Dead Man's Shoes as well, awesome.
even if it is written by Stephen king ans has tom Hanks in it.
Why not?
He is a good writer (Shawshank, Misery, It) and Tom Hanks is a good actor (Philadelphia, Forest Gump, Big).
PSA: Big - 3pounds in HMV at the moment
for moving and thought provoking, last king of scotland and hotel rwanda
Ink
Roam
Tampopo
Any Given Sunday
Ground Hog Day
Seven Years in Tibet
Some of the above but I loved the book of the Diving Bell and the Butterfly - truly great - but have never stayed awake for the whole film
The Lovely Bones
Awakenings
They are the only 2 films to make me cry since reaching adulthood.
As a kid I cried at
The Great Escape
which bit in the lovely bones dezinald? i'm a bit of a cryer in films but lovely bones, despite being an entertaining film, didnt stir a single emotion
Patch Adams A+++++++++++
The Killing Fields.
Loved - Dead Mans Shoes
One, if you have not seen already & bike related - Graeme Obree, Flying Scotsman.
Schindler’s List
The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas
The Reader
which bit in the lovely bones dezinald?
It was more the music - when 'Song to the Siren' kicked in. Then again Phil, you haven't got kids, so probably a bit different. I didn't really consider that film "entertainment" personally 🙁
+1 for Fight Club and that quote from it 🙂
Man on Wire was quite inspirational for me. Not that I'll be tightrope walking between buildings any time soon.
Another +1 for It's a Wonderful Life.
The Killing Fields is one of the most moving films I've ever seen though.
Has anyone seen the first grader?
Worth a watch?
Another vote for dead man's shoes, lives of others and senna.
TT: closer to the edge is another excellent documentary from this year, and you don't have to be remotely interested in the TT to enjoy it.
I'd also recommend a French film called tell no one
Into the Wild +1
Incredibly moving.
Into the wild
The only thing this film moved me to do was to switch it off. I wanted the annoying spoilt little brat to die from the start.
seven pounds is a great film, well worth a watch
i dont have kids (that i'm aware of) tis a very good point, although i've grown up in a world of child abuse, paedophiles and rape so i'm a little bit numb to it. its love stories, father-son storylines and massive acts of kindness that are instant tear triggers for me in films.
