Forrest Gump.

I've watched it 3 times, all after finishing a long set of night shifts, and it makes me weep like a baby.

The diving bell and the butterfly. Bout a French man who suffers a stroke and dictates a book by blinking. Really amazing film.

Fight Club

"You buy furniture. You tell yourself, this is the last sofa I will ever need in my life. Buy the sofa, then for a couple years you're satisfied that no matter what goes wrong, at least you've got your sofa issue handled. Then the right set of dishes. Then the perfect bed. The drapes. The rug. Then you're trapped in your lovely nest, and the things you used to own, now they own you"

I watched The Light Thief the other night - moving but not the most uplifting film.

Another vote for Up, weirdly good film.

If you want moving, try Requiem For A Dream, The Wrestler, Pi, Black Swan. They will all move you to somewhere you don't want to be mind.

Also Lost In Translation. Another oddly good film.

Garden State isn't too bad, Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind is interesting, World's Greatest Dad, Shawshank Redemption (obviously).

Well most of my suggestions are gone!

Seven Pounds deserves to be more well known that it is, great film. +1 for Forrest Gump, Eternal Sunshine and Shawshank.

The Pursuit of Happyness is worth a watch. Pay it Forward is good.

some beautiful suggestions so far, as above i was hugely impressed by will smith in seven pounds and the pursuit of happines.

some suggestions i haven't noticed come up yet:

'finding neverland' (its the bit on the park bench at the end)
marley and me (its the bit where marley puts his head on jennifer whatherface's lap after seeing the doctor)
pretty much any pixar film
the notebook (i know its a romance... but if you love anybody as much as ryan goslings character then its pretty intense)

Two Lane Blacktop is ace, it's even got Harry Dean Stanton in it and everyone knows that he's the best actor ever.

Which leads me nicely on to my rec

no sound on the trailer - but it's a russian take on german occupation
of belarussia (spelling?) during WW2. Genuinely frightening.

The Green Mile's a proper mission though!

A Beautiful Mind

Definitely agree with Up, I shed a (tiny) manly tear at the montage in the beginning. Dead Man's Shoes as well, awesome.

Why not?

He is a good writer (Shawshank, Misery, It) and Tom Hanks is a good actor (Philadelphia, Forest Gump, Big).

Ink
Roam
Tampopo
Any Given Sunday
Ground Hog Day
Seven Years in Tibet

Some of the above but I loved the book of the Diving Bell and the Butterfly - truly great - but have never stayed awake for the whole film

The Lovely Bones
Awakenings

They are the only 2 films to make me cry since reaching adulthood.
As a kid I cried at
The Great Escape

which bit in the lovely bones dezinald?

It was more the music - when 'Song to the Siren' kicked in. Then again Phil, you haven't got kids, so probably a bit different. I didn't really consider that film "entertainment" personally 🙁

Another vote for dead man's shoes, lives of others and senna.

TT: closer to the edge is another excellent documentary from this year, and you don't have to be remotely interested in the TT to enjoy it.

I'd also recommend a French film called tell no one

Into the wild

The only thing this film moved me to do was to switch it off. I wanted the annoying spoilt little brat to die from the start.

seven pounds is a great film, well worth a watch

i dont have kids (that i'm aware of) tis a very good point, although i've grown up in a world of child abuse, paedophiles and rape so i'm a little bit numb to it. its love stories, father-son storylines and massive acts of kindness that are instant tear triggers for me in films.
