A little off the wall, but The Big Over Easy by Jasper Fforde. Silly, funny, but also a very well written murder mystery with it all!

    Rogue Male

    Really entertaining retro 1930s thriller.

Apparently it was the inspiration for the “First Blood” novel.

For something a bit different try “The Honey Guide” by Richard Crompton. A Masai detective working in modern Nairobi.

The Woods or Tell No One both by Harlan Coben.

His stuff is really formulaic, but both of those are still page turners.

The City and The City by China Mieville. Not your standard fare but very good.

+1 for all the China stuff, very off the wall but definitely worth a read. Don’t let sci-fi or fantasy label put you off these great reads.

How about Sherlock Holmes? All four novels and the 50+ short stories are available as free ebooks from gutenburg.org.

Try a few of Len Deighton’s books from the sixties (you can get them as ebooks or often pick up originals in charity shops).. The main character is never named but was played by Michael Caine and called Harry Palmer in the film(s) of the books..

They’re good stories but its also interesting to see how things have changed since they were written: computers that fill entire rooms, telephone exchanges etc.

They are a bit different to the stuff thats published today, but definitely worth a go..

I also enjoyed I am pilgrim and will definitely be reading the two more he’s writing. I like all of the Kathy Reichs Bones books. On a slightly different book type I also enjoy Scott Mariani and the Ben Hope books.

If you like strange ‘Noir’ Private eye detective murder mystery books then can heartily recommend the Aberystwyth series by Malcolm Pryce. I’ve read all 6 and each is an excellent read. Check out these links to give you a flavour:

Very different but equally brilliant is ‘Twilight’ by William Gay. Don’t worry – nowt to do with vampires.
