Got some sealed bearings that are a bit gritty so i pop off the seals and inspect - clean but little grease. So using a grease gun i pump grease into the cage either side of each ball, rotate and mucky grease comes out. Wipe this away and repeat whilst spinning bearings. Trouble is i am sure i am using more grease than is worth while, am i doing it wrong?

How do you get more grease in without it coming back out?

Flush the dirty grease out with degreaser first, then once it's clean and dry pack with fresh grease. Degreaser's designed for this after all.

as coatsey says - but grease is cheap at a tenner a kilo and you will not get muich more life out of those bearings. It'll do until you can get new ones.

smear it in with your fingers, doesn't need to be packed in solid, just work it into the gaps.

What do you mean waste. Are you ladling it on to the floor or pushing a little bit at a time in with your finger tip. I assume these are bearings for a bike and not a tractor or oil rig.

Right Bearings out and seals off, bath in neat fenwicks for 30 mins, sluiced with boiling water, re-bathed in fenwicks, scrubbed with the nail brush (don't tell the Mrs!!), re-sluiced in boiling water, wd-40 to drive water out. Cloth dried and now on the radiator, ready to repack with quality grease!!

Is that right??

I'm thinking if you've gone to the trouble of getting the bearings out you might just as well fit new ones ๐Ÿ™‚ I'm going to be testing some Ebay specials to see how long they last compared to SKF...
