We were having a look on the yougov licence website for one of the lads at work, who has basically more points than a pointy thing, do I thought I’d type in my details. It would appear my licence expired 4 years ago. On looking at my photocard the dates matched but it was only ever valid for 18 months. My paper licence however says I’m good till 2050 odd or something similar. Which one is the daddy?

Good question I want to know too.

I thought the license is for life so you don’t have to renew it?

Ya, which one is the daddy?

This may be of interest, clearly the photocard is becoming more imporant. Not an issue with historic paper copies however.

If you need to renew, just do it online, it uses your passport photo.

What I can’t figure out is why it was only ever valid for 18 months?

You probably moved, lost it or got it reissued at some point, and the 18 months was the balance of the original 10 years since photo submission

Yeah it’s 10 years, so your photo stays (mainly) up to date.

I have to renew mine every three years due to being diabetic which is a bit of a ball ache but there you go.

Mine was renewed for something daft like 10 weeks when i took my bike test.

As mentioned above you can do it online in a few minutes if you have a passport. Ironically my passport was older than the photocard pic!

No, mine had expired by one year. I rang DVLA and was told as far as they were concerned i was legal to drive, but get it changed ASAP as if pulled over by the police they could get arsy over it. Did it at the post office and took only couple of minutes, all your details are on the PNC almost immediately.

As long as your current address is on your old paper type, I don’t think you need one ?

Yup, I’ve only got a paper one. Get a few funny looks when people want it for ID, but it’s valid for another 40-odd years…

Most people who passed pre 1998 and haven’t moved house since will probably have a paper only license.

No real point in paying for it unless you need to.

(Although loads of people also have an old address on a paper only license, which isn’t a great idea as it carries a fine of £1000)

Make sure you take copies of anything you send to DVLA for update.

I have three personal experiences where they have utterly failed to return items accurately.

Missing entitlement, it took fifteen years for them to ‘ solve’ that one.

A t5 transporter issued with a new v5 showing it as a Lupo.

My wife’s drivinig licence returned after we had got married, one part with her original signature, the other with the new one.

DVLA couldn’t make a paper plane properly.
