[Closed] MOT experts - CV joint gaiters?

MOT is coming up in a week or 2.

I have one CV joint gaiter that is beginning to crack/split. It hasn't actually gone through yet - no grease leaking out.

Will it be OK like this or is any damage to the gaiter a straight fail?

It'll get done eventually, but if I can put off the cost a bit longer then that's good.

Put scruffs on, buy a kit for £12 and 30 mins job done.

You'll prolly get an advisory note about it, if the grease can't get out then it's not a fail.

I think!

I'm pretty sure that 'perished' ia a fail, not dead cert though. It's gonna need doing anyway & once it's split & all yer grease flies out it's not long before the joint goes west as well, more expense! What car is it?

its easy enough to do, get some spring retainers and be very careful and you'll be fine.

If its secure at each end and not leaking any grease out, then its a pass.
But don't take it to Quick fit outfits. Best place is local council garage as they are not looking for work on Jo public's cars.

I have "stitched" the hole up with a few cable ties in the past, you have to be carefull as the gaiter needs to move a lot on the outer cv joint,it has got me through mots in the past, but it is really a temporary bodge if your keeping the car long term.

get it fixed asap if you can,any major water/dirt ingress will accellerate wear in the joint eventually. 😥

if its only cracked and not split it should pass with an advisory no problem 😀

You can buy a split gaiter kit - you get a split gaiter and a tube of glue. Saves a lot of expensive dismantling. My old 305 got by on one every other mot for a few years before the end. I miss my 305 though!

I think you'll get through, but you get 2 weeks anyway if it fails iirc
split gaiters are REALLY fiddly, but it's so much hassle to put anew one on otherwise.
