Merging audio files in iMovie

Looks straightforward, but is there a way to get the tracks to overlap slightly? The internet is full of videos showing how easy it is, but they are apparently using a different version. I have the version that comes with whatever the latest MacOS is and try as I might, I cannot arrange the tracks so that they overlap - if I move one over the other it simply trims them. They are FLAC files not sure if that makes a difference.

FLAC is not natively supported by Macs, run the files through XLD first to convert them to whichever Mac supported audio codec suits you AAC, mp3 or similar.
