My dad went to Tesco’s and the checkouts had big queues except one which was empty.

On approaching the conveyor belt the lady stopped him and asked if he had any alcohol. She pointed to her sign that said she was a Moslem and would not sell alcohol.

There was no mention of a refusal to  sell shelfish or pork products.

My understanding of it is that they are not allowed to consume intoxicating liquor.

Touching a tin should be fine.

Does this mean the lady in question would refuse to sell or use hand sanitizer?

    It’s ‘Muslim’.

Why don’t you ask her, improve your understanding?

I’ll say it, did this actually happen to your Dad, or did you just hear this tale and think it would be more engaging if it was more personal?

In 2016 a Tesco worker refused to sell someone Alcohol because of their religion, Tesco apologised so it’s unlikely they would have made a policy allowing for it.

to her sign that said she was a Moslem and would not sell alcohol.

presumably she spelled it correctly though? as Moslem (or more specifically the pronunciation Moz-lem) is offensive to many arabic people?

Does this mean the lady in question would refuse to sell or use hand sanitizer?

So now we know you are trolling…

I’m not sure what the problem is – there is a short queue for people who don’t want booze. Its like a cash only, or card only till, or 9-items or less. Her religious belief mean she doesn’t want to help people get drunk – her employer have chosen to support her in that and help customers who just want to buy a loaf and a pint of milk. Would you be upset if they did the same with their under 18 till staff, rather than asking a supervisor to OK the sale?

My friend who is Muslim does not go in to any area where alcohol is being consumed, it is his personal choice and forms part of his beliefs. As with any set of beliefs there are varying degrees of it and some may not want to handle alcohol, so if that is the case with her, then fair play. If Tesco want to employ her and support her with these, then good on Tesco. I very much doubt Tesco would have had a sign up announcing her religious beliefs, am sure it would have just been a no alcohol served here line.

Is it really suitable flying to ask Jesus to close the thread? 😉

I would expect it is the preference of the individual and her right is begin fully met by the company. Personally I dont know the ins and outs of each religion or sub divisions, but why question, when its clear all that does is cause yet more division.
Smile ,nod, no alcohol(I mean who buys alcohol on a Wednesday ?? ) shop done, smiles all around no probs.

I thought you clever geeks were aware of why division is so dangerous.

It’s Tesco. Unless he went to multiple Tesco stores, then it would be Tescos.

Were there any Clydesdale £20 notes used in the incident?
I found that’s a sure fire way to cause a stir at most checkouts south of the border. 😉

As far as i am aware it is Tesco policy that employees who cannot handle items such as alcohol do not work on the till.

…and bury the “prophets before customers” line?

I think it should be re-titled to “man buying alcohol had to stand in slightly longer queue”.

I think it should be re-titled to “shopkeeper tries to cause scandal about more successful shopkeeper”.

I’m as much an alcoholic as the next chap but even I don’t buy booze each and every time I go to the supermarket.

It was so busy that all the checkouts had huge queues but not a single person was just in for bread and milk?

    I smell bullshit.

My point is that religious people of whatever flavour choose the bits they like and are total hypocrites about the rest.

    It certainly did happen.

Tesco Langley Eastbourne if anyone wants to double check.

I bought cheap cider after the school drop off one morning. I was only making a slow cook casserole but holy shit did I feel like a wrong-un. A £15 bottle of White Burgundy on the other hand…

I might be in the minority here but think it’s best to let Trolls have their threads, and let them run their inevitable course…

He’s entitled to bait us lefty, tree hugging, tolerant types just as we’re apt to point out his errors in understanding/blatantly made up scenarios… 🙂

Otherwise the next thread will be some “cancel culture” BS…

^ (Sad face) That thread was about examining ‘cancel culture’

Was not a ‘troll‘ thread. Actually put a lot of late hours into researching that thread/factchecking much crap. Turned out to be a spirited discussion with some good-natured thread, with conflicting satire from differing spectra? IIIRC?

YMMV. Obv will try harder next time to engage more commenters. But … factchecking is time-consuming and wearing whilst b*llshit is instant, effecting, and rarely required to give evidence.

so the moral of this story is that large corporations should somehow be less understanding about the rights of everyday citizens, that they themselves choose employ because otherwise some random guy might get confused about what he knows. either that or the Russian China propaganda spybots have managed to infiltrate the singletrack forums as well as most of the social media platforms. nowhere is sacred

I would guess around 60% of UK people think like this. That is probably a low guess as well.

I got refused alcohol in Morrison’s once as I didn’t have any ID.

I was going to take umbrage at the outrage and embarrassment but decided to take it is a compliment and confirmation of my youthful good looks.
