[Closed] Long term car rental - is that a thing ?

I've been thinking about spending some extended chunks of time abroad. You can find a place to stay easily enough via AirBnB etc., but if you need a car, what to do? Ordinary rental works out very expensive. Buying a 2nd hand car is a possibility, but the buying and selling would be a pain in the blx. Is long term renting something anyone else has experience of, or other solutions (get a bike, yes 🙂 )

Where are you going ?
Why not take a road trip (and your car) if you are staying for a fair while ?

How long? IIRC enterprise do reduced rates for over a week.

I was thinking 1-2 months, and I don't have a car 🙂

Googling around it seems that you can rent a car for about 3-400 per month from the usual suspects, but I was wondering if there's a cheaper way...

Depends where you're going, but why not a motorhome (not a campervan, you're going to want a toilet and shower for 2 months). Not much difference in price compared to B&B's and car rental, but with the flexibility that your accommodation is sorted without having to book something every night.

Some destinations have whole streets of parked up campers with travelers selling them to newcomers via Gumtree or ebay before heading home. Downside, it'll be an old van and you run the risk of it being a mechanical write off.

Here in Spain I know a few people who rent back to back outside of summer. Ie, same rental company in 2 week chunks, a guy I know last year did it for 6 months...has to be 2 weeks max and from the airport. The staff know him well...cant believe it's not in their t n c s to stop it. He pays c 15-50 e per fortnight and obviously has his own xs insurance.

Funnily enough now he s a regular he knows every scam going.

Good luck

We had a guy come from Spain to UK to help with our build and he had a long term rental - don't know if it was from a big co or a semi-independent. Often a few months at a time from the sound of it and he'd negotiated a really good rate.

Can't see why it would be an issue out of peak season - I get the impression that most of these places have trouble with storing unrented vehicles and there's no more risk if you have it long term than short.

The staff know him well…cant believe it’s not in their t n c s to stop it

why would it be? if it works for them renting it at that price it's not an issue. fewer costs for them on a longer term rental in terms of cleaning and admin.

Don't want to be a party popper, but I reckon £300 per month for a fully insured, fully maintained (new) car is pretty decent.

You could buy a jalopy, but the time spent finding it, sorting out local insurance and equivalents of road fund licence and MoT, why bother?

For £10 per day, you're getting a really, really good deal.

You'd struggle to rent a mountain bike for that in many places.

Just my two penneth.

To be fair, that’s a perfectly good reason not to take your car with you 👍

Pretty sure that’s cheaper than renting a half decent mountain bike for week in Morzine !
I’d say that’s a bloody good deal if you need a car constantly while you are away.
