I am going to be buying a van to convert into a camper in the summer and I have a fairly generic question (as in the title) which will affect the way i’m designing it at the moment.

Is it possible to simply chop out the bulkhead between the cab and loading area? Or is it part of the chassis and will it then affect the overall structure of the van? Or is it just another panel? And what about just chopping out a section down the middle of it?

Main reason being it would be great to just be able to go between the two spaces without having to go outside and also for letting light in.

I think it is just a panel yes. Plenty of vans come with or without them as an option. My berlingo work van has none which I’ve left that way so any arsehole who wants to break in can see there’s no kit left in there.

It does make it a bit noisier on the road though.

Wasn’t structural in my T5. Just unbolted and went to the scrapyard.

In many vans, the bulkhead is just screwed/bolted/pop-riveted into place, so it can’t be structural.

Probably worth checking out for the specific van you have in mind, though…

I’ve no bulkhead in my vivaro.

Easier for me as potential thieves can look in and see an empty dog cage and not a van full of tools.

    Not structural on my Trafic.

Removed the bulkhead from my Renault trafic and sold it on eBay for £75!
It was just bolted to the chassis, and took about 10 mins to remove.

Had to drill out a few rivets on my Trafic, gone now though and an easy first job.

Factory fitted t5 ones used to be spot welded too – nothing that a whack with a cold chisel couldn’t sort. Just be careful near the seatbelts!
