Calling all commuters...

After my little "Car 1 - 0 Cyclist" incident last week, I'm going to get myself a jacket that doesn't give anyone the excuse of "I didn't see you". Or at least gives me the response of "why the **** not, I look like a belisha beacon"

My moon on a stick requirements:

- Hi-viz, especially for grey, rainy mornings and evenings

- reflective wot-nots a bonus for riding at night

- not bulky (many of the ones I've seen seem to be pretty bulky)

- waterproof

- nicely breathable

- decent cycling 'cut'

Recommendations?

I have a bright white gilet from Decathlon which was only £15 - has some reflective bits on it as well. I think it makes you quite visible and when it is hot doesn't make you boil in the bag like a jacket can do!

Cheers, I'll have a look. I think I'd rather go full jacket rather than a gilet though

Proviz jackets are good for commuting and reflective all over in the dark.

I always liked the idea of these planet x ones.

similar ones may be available elsewhere.

I don't like riding jackets at the moment, tend to use a gilet, and seem to have a penchant for the rapha brevet stuff. Nice fit, light/packable and enough reflective stuff to make me happy. You can pick visible or subtued colours (yellow, green and pink here!)

I use a Polaris lightweight high viz gilet for darker commuting. It its its raining enough for a waterproof the gilet can still go on top.

S'all 'bout "conspicuity" and creating the visual image of a cyclist.

In the dark, amber pedal reflectors and those ProViz / reflective jackets are great.

In the day light fluro colours / with chequer patterns help.

I personally use day time lights year round on the road, especially helpful in micro climates (think: bright sunny day and sunglass wearing driver goes under tree canopy).

I think a pick and mix approach according to conditions / time of day / day light is best, rather than just one jacket.

Maybe buy a cheaper fluro jacket & replace yearly, they dull in use.

Just remember, they can't see you & they do want to get you!!!

Hope your healing well & glad to hear your confident to get out on the bike again.

Cheers all, interesting input.

From googling around, it seems that the bits off my list that are the most difficult to fulfil are 'not bulky' and, especially, 'cycling cut'. Lots of hi-viz stuff, obviously, with lots of fairly decent reviews, but many making the point about fabrics being stiff and bunching up and 'casual' fit. It's odd, given that there a gazillion nicely cut 'normal viz' cycling jackets available.

Hmm...

I've got a bunch of different clothes (mostly not bike specific, and a good chunk are black or dark) that I wear on the bike, hot and humid, warm, cool, cold, freezing, cold and wet, warm and wet...

I didn't want have to wear the same jacket for all conditions, or buy flouro/reflective versions of each. Or only wear the hi-viz when the conditions suit the jacket.  So I bought a tabard/gillet type thing.  I don't look sexy, admittedly, but it does its 1 job well (2, if you count night and day!)  and leaves all the other clothes to do their job when it's their time in the weather.  And it's cheap.

Ticks all your boxes apart from the waterproof one, but I'm guessing you've got a waterproof jacket already.  (Black?  😀 )

And if you're riding to the pub, meeting people after work, putting the bike on the train etc, you can stuff the vest in the bag and look like a normal person.

2nd (3rd) the idea of a gillet, usable all year round without cooking you in the summer and spring. I have a bright yellow Decathlon job that seems to do the job.

I found that using one of those Sam Brown type over vest things (I've got an Altura one) made a huge difference in the daytime and that is with me being a serial high viz jacket wearer before that. The combination of orange, yellow and reflective strips seems to connect with their brain for some reason.

Another plus for them is that they are light and flimsy, so no issues with bunching/etc.

I'd also recommend using a helmet light all the time. Doesn't have to be strong, just flashing. It means that the drivers eye is caught when you look at them.

For night time, those proviz jackets look cracking but not tried one yet. Could wear it under the best type thing for a belt and braces approach.

Another option - 3M Sam Browne belt.

Allows you to wear what you want/already have. I have a silver one that reflects light nicely and calms Mrs Lex when I wear dark tops for cycling in low/no light conditions.
