Help me repair my XTR pedal please!

So these have been lying around for a few years after the pedal unwound itself. I’ve finally got around to trying to fix it. The pedal axle is out, but the outside of the bearing cartridge outer seems to be stuck in. I managed to get the axle to hold something (nut on the end?) but could not pull the cartridge outer out. Any ideas?

Nothing attaches down there. It’s possibly just held in with grease. Try flushing with gt85 or similar.

That’s what I thought, have tried moving it but it doesn’t budge so I wonder if it has welded itself in….

Definitely stuck fast. Any ideas how to get it out?

Blowtorch/heat on the outside then whack it on the bench & see if the inner bit drops out?

I had he same issue, even drilled a hole in the opposite side and tried to tap it out with a punch… wouldn’t budge 🙁

Blind bearing puller might work to grip the inner sleeve.

Drill to make it thinner then a flat screwdriver to fold it in on itself?

As Rick said, it’s a 5 min job with someone with a set of
these. useful kit for all bearings on a bike.

Do you need to remove it?

The sleeve holds the bearings in place, so yes, he will have to remove it – it’s also hardened steel, so drilling may not be an option

Does the bearing need replaced

I think the bearing does need replacing. I have the superstar bearing puller but doubt there is enough purchase, I’ll give it a go

The reason the axle has come out with out that sleeve is because the end of the axle has sheared off, stripped or the end nut has wound itself off. There’s no way to reassemble the pedal with that in there.

It comes out, or it’s scrap

Both my XTR pedal axles snapped at the locknut and the pedals fell off. I suspect this is something similar – apparently it was a bad batch of axles, shimano replaced without question but this was a couple of years ago

I have a single XTR pedal after one snapped. Can’t remember what side it is, but anyone can have it for free. I will find out what side it is when I get home.

The sleeve (larger item between the two “3”s in the picture below) forms one of the races for both pedal bearings (there are no cartridge bearings) and is an interference fit in the pedal body. It is pushed into position when the long nut “2” (which is also a race of the inner bearing) is tightened into the pedal body. As Onzadog said, it should have been pulled back out again when nut “2” was unscrewed from the pedal body unless the spindle has snapped, or the small nut/locknut on the end of the spindle have come off.

Bearing puller / slide hammer is probably the only option (improvise with a rawl bolt?). If the threaded part of the spindle has snapped off, I would question whether it was worth the trouble.

Ok thanks guys, not had a go with the bearing puller yet but Molgrips my working pedal is a left, what’s yours? If right I would be very pleased to take it off your hands and happy to make a donation to charity or something

I had a pair of XTR pedals that broke when I tried to service them, the head of the sleeve part 2 in the diagram sheared off. I don’t have them anymore and now very sceptical of lightweight top end stuff, sticking with XT and Ultegra

For XTR pedals the repair is exactly the same as for Crank Brothers pedals and is ridiculously simple. Throw the pointless crap in the bin and replace with XT!

Captain danger, I think it’s a rut one, but might be left. I can check shortlyi am now at home 🙂

The pedals in question lasted 8 years so I don’t hold a grudge.

I have a single XT that I use as a bottle opener. Works a treat.

When my xtr spindle snapped I replaced it with a spindle from an xt one. Useful to know they are interchangeable.
