I've got my eye on a Boardman Adv 8.9 gravel bike from Halfords, and they have a 30% trade in offer if you bring in any of their own brand bikes to trade (Boardman,Apollo,Carrera,Voodoo, etc)
I have a Carrera kids bike my daughter has just about outgrown, so in theory I should be able to get a £1,200 bike for £840?
I have read and re-read the small print, and I cant see any reason I cant do it, but there must be a catch, something I am missing that they will throw in my way, it surely cant be that easy can it?
So has anyone used the offer recently, or has any insider knowledge they want to throw my way before I head down to my local store?
Many thanks in advance
If the small print doesn't forbid it then go for it.
Curry's did something similarly stupid once, I traded a ~25yo Toshiba Satellite C with a 386 chip and Windows 95 for a discounted Samsung netbook. They wised up the next time they did it, gave the guys in the shop a laugh though.
If it works then Gumtree is going to get cleared out!
can't see a catch per se, but have you checked the (long) list of excluded bikes.

Also - as long as not excluded what's to stop you buying a sub £100 kids bike and trading that straight in for 30% off?
Seems mad?
Code also works on stuff that’s already reduced, could be some right bargains now 🤔
think the vast majority are just too old - bike must be 5 years old or less. That’s basically just a list of every bike they’ve produced between 5 & 20 years ago 😂but have you checked the (long) list of excluded bikes.

Believe me, I have reeeeeeally looked at this and can't see why you can't just buy a £35 balance bike and trade it in. It does seem mad, but I can't see anything that says you can't.
Luckily/unluckily, the bike I'd like is out of stock
Oh, and you can also get it, post discount, on Cycle 2 Work...
Haven't used it this time around but they did something similar a few years ago. You could trade in an old helmet, bike or scooter for something like 20% off.
I took an old Giro helmet into the shop and they gave me a Voodoo Hoodoo for less than 500 quid.
Couldn't quite understand how it worked out for them but it worked well enough for me.
Nothing odd at all. Clearly the mark up means halfords still makes money 🤷♂️ We’ve been getting our pants pulled down for years nothing changes!!
I don't read it as a guaranteed 30%, they value the trade in bike.
They have a price table with ranges here;
https://www.halfords.com/cycling/services-advice/bike-trade-in-pricing-tables.html
Or is this a different deal you are talking about?
Worked for me, and they let me trade in a Boardman road bike from 2012. The employee agreed that I could have bought the cheapest kids bike to trade back in. Also, he couldn't understand why they were doing it.
If the offer is still running this weekend, I am going to give it a go.
Half tempted to order one online now, but I'm not sure I want to take the risk on the deal failing.

Order and pay online and distance selling rules apply so you can cancel the purchase. Even if you pick up instore.
I think this came up before when the helmet trade-in thing happened, but the discount is automatically applied when you buy online. Then you're supposed to take the trade-in into the store within 14 days.
So... what happens if you don't actually take the bike in? Shock horror. Are they actually going to chase you up? Does a ****ed old Apollo actually have any value?
I traded in a £10 second hand Hello Kitty kids bike for £500 off my bike at Evans once. It was already 40% off in the sale too.
This is actually tempting me to get one of those Bizango Carbon Pro's on C2W. Makes it ~£905 for a Carbon hardtail with SID's!

That's what confused me, the T&C's talk about a "valuation" of the bike being traded in. Is that just weasel words so that it becomes a separate transaction or is it going to end up being "upto 30% off, [assuming you trade in an identical older model in as new condition, so if you trade in a £35 balance bike off the shop floor they'll only offer you a fiver for it]"
Also if you order and pay online you should get 6% cashback via Quidco.

I think theoretically yes, practically the person in Halfords will just take whatever you give them, as long as it's not on the excluded list. And if they don't, just cancel the whole thing and get your money back.
My other issue is that if I want to C2W it, that runs on a monthly, er, cycle at my employer, and my next window is from the 1st June and I get the voucher about a week after that. What are the odds of this offer still being available by then 🙁
that’s for a separate scheme already running where you can sell your bike through them. If the value is more than you’d get with this other 30% off scheme, they’re supposed to tell you, is all.the T&C’s talk about a “valuation” of the bike being traded in.
I'm actually now semi-annoyed that I bought a second-hand Ramin the other day, this sounds scamtastic.
Also just remembered I got £100 off our TV at Richer Sounds in exchange for an old 10" CRT.
I really have form for this nonsense! 🤣
If they still did the ADV 9.0 I'd be taking advantage of this for sure..

30% off and C2W? Shit on a brick!!!
Thanks for this thread, was very timely for me. I've been on Zwift with my ancient Cannondale roadbike since Nov and had decided as the BB was getting really noisy and it was generally really tatty I thought I'd treat myself to a replacement on my works C2W scheme. It runs through Halfords so you only really get a choice of Halfords or Tredz for supply and it's capped at a thousand quid. Works well at the end as there's no secondary hire period or final value to pay, after 12 months the payments just stop.
As it realistically will get 90% of it's use in the garage I had a look at Halfords and they had two bikes I thought would be OK, both for £585 - Voodoo Nakisi gravel bike or Boardman SLR 8.6 Road Bike. Ordered the voucher and...... by the time it arrived both bikes had gone up to £650. Which is no bloody good as you can't put money to the voucher....
Anyway, read this thread and did some sums. A Boardman ADV 8.6 is £825, lop 30% off and it's £577.50 - under my voucher value. A quick scan on Facebook marketplace finds me a local qualifying Apollo part ex bike for £30 and the order's placed with Halfords. Picked it up last night, all very easy.
So I got a 'better' bike than planned for £30 more - the cost of the Apollo. Happy days!
As per my orlther thread..
Could I order the la Pierre overvolt 5.5 ,chop in my Carrera subway and get a British cycling discount as well?
@zippykona - think the 30% part ex scheme has ended now - you'd need to wait for it to come back around again. Not sure if ebikes were included, I have a feeling they weren't. I know that they were specifically excluded from part exchange, not sure why.
Yeah the 30% scheme ended really quickly, not sure they’ll be doing it again soon! Pretty sure e-bikes were included, they don’t do anything particularly high-spec and they aren’t the most expensive bikes from Halfords! Looks like they’ve replaced the offer with this, which is way less tasty:
https://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/up-to-ps1000-gift-card-tarde-in-for-your-old-halfords-bike-4135470
Yup, I would have got between £29 and £65 for my £30 p/x bike according to the table - not quite as nice as the £247.50 off the Boardman I picked up.
