I promised a friend of mine that I'd help her choose a mountain bike but I don't have a lot of knowledge of hardtails. She's on a limited budget so I'm thinking something second hand might be good. She's tried out my 19" Schwinn Mesa GS and seemed to get on with it well.

Can anyone recommend a nice hardtail for a lady?

Yes, second-hand. Sounds as though she is tall?

Lighter forks and lighter wheels make such a difference.

    How tall is she?

    Long legs or long body?

What kind of riding is she likely to be doing?

Yeah she is quite tall (about 5' 10/11" maybe not sure) and leggy too. I suppose something quite light. I'm thinking maybe aluminium frame and air forks but so many brands to choose from.

How much money? Mrs TJ got a specialized Myka and likes it – it is a well made bike

She's just getting into it but I think she would be quite adventurous as she does a bit of freestyle snowboarding too.

If she's 5ft 10, don't bother with a women's frame, unless she's very long in the leg and very short in the body, in which case she'd need to look at large or even XL women's sized bikes.

    How about this bike…

Seems like it could be ideal to me. My ex GF is 5ft 10, I built her a bike based around an 18" mens frame (that 17" Specialized is the same length in the TT though), it fits her spot on.

Thanks. I'll ask her what she's willing to spend.

Does anyone know a good place to find second hand bikes in Scotland?
