I know good and cheap is an oxymoron. Still, rear wheel on my old school Trek hybrid was stolen. It was a nice 6 speed cassette. Now I have to buy a screw on freewheel type to get 6 speed. Bike carries a child in child seat and I don't always avoid pot holes and do a little very light singletrack, more like footpaths, (without child)
Anyone try Decathlon B'twin, Raleigh tru build or This Weinmann Zac 2000? Thanks

I think 8 speed is the same cog spaceing as 6-speed, so you might be able to get a normal wheel and fit an 8s cassette and have some redundant gears (11-32, lose the 11/12 or 29/32)?

So, another question would be, is there that much difference in performance between a freewheel and a Cassette? I'm torn between going whole hog and replacing wheel, shifters, gearing. Or just getting it running again. Suposed to be my run around, but you know how it is.
The whole bike cost 50 quid, although it was a bargain.

Freehub has wider spaced bearings, and is therefore stronger. But the biggest difference is trying to remove a sized freewheel on my tandem ๐Ÿ‘ฟ . That said, the axles on Suzue tandem frewheel hubs also have habit of bending due to bearing placement.

I'd upgrade to 8spd with a new or even used shifters now, if I were you.

Try woolyhatshop. Noticed some there when I was sourcing bits for a friend who had his commuter wheels nabbed.
