Picked up an 80mm rim yesterday for my fatfront bike.
Nice and wide but a bit weighty so set about it with a 38mm hole saw.

Maybe it could take a few extra holes on the outer part of the rim too. 😕

Just got to get it built up now.

I may be being dumb but whats to stop the inner tube bulging thru the holes?

Otherwise fine use of power tools and 70s drilled stylee

    Really strong, wide rim tape!
Reinforced parcel tape often works well.

    A rim strip. 🙄

Thinking of going with some of this stuff for hi reflective pimpness.

    have you reweighed them?

I think he’s dropped about the same weight drilling the holes as he will use in additional rim tape to stop the tubes bulging out through the rim when he hits a tree root at speed.

Not weighed it but it’s supposed to drop about 300grams so that’d be on hell of a rim tape.
It’s all been done before by a few other people so i’ve no worries about any problems.

Ribbon works a treat before the rim tape..also can colour match!,
Im going to 100mm rims in spring that are double drilled (9 zero 7)
i saw tartan ribbon 2″ wide in a local shop 😀

I did this to a set of Surly Large Marge rims. It knocked about 200g off per rim, even after adding rim strips. I couldn’t use quite as big holes though.

You could make a whole stan’s rim out of the waste!

To me that looks like as soon as you tension the spokes up, it’s gonna pull the rim apart between the holes!

I think they’re made out of girders PP so not much danger of that 😉

You don’t need rim tape anyway – it doesn’t matter if the innertube bulges a bit through the holes – it always freaks people out when you poke the tube, and explain to people that that is the inertube LOL.

The section where the spoke holes are is almost double the thickness of the rest of the rim.

Before you take it anywhere, just ride up the curb outside your house…

And why didn’t you just buy a lighter (same width) rim?

I think it’s going to take a lot more than that to cause any damage to the rim when it’s got a 3.7 tyre at 6psi protecting it. 😉

And why didn’t you just buy a lighter (same width) rim?

    Maybe because there aren’t any…

you wont bend that rim even drilled Stu! 😀
the tyres do take all the impact, even the 60 TPI sidewalls go hairy but rarely split,

something wrong with this thread…no one has asked why the big tyre? 😉

It’s quite amussing the size of stuff you can get away with just riding into with the Larry isn’t it. 8)

Not much meat around the spoke holes. You going to be able to tension the wheel up?

As I said up there ^^ it’s all been done before.
A few people have gone even biggerer on the holes and also gone for extra holes inbetween the big ones too. 😯

“Cheese rim content”. Understandably, I was hesitant to open this one.

Good work, fella – I have just the tool for removing all those nasty sharp edges without filing, too. Give us a shout if you need it.

Any reason you didn’t offset the holes Stu?

    singlespeedstu
    Full Member

I just went for the most straight forwards option by keeping them in the center “well” of the rim.

I might still drill some smaller holes on the outer track opposite to the spoke holes though.
