Flicking through it this morning whilst munching on my Cheerios and I must have noticed about 5 or 6 of them! Advertising rates in newspaper and magazines have been in decline for some time, but his business must be booming.

Didn't stop the mag slating his adjustable seatpost – which I've heard is about as reliable as a chocolate teapot.

He's running a business. They advertise, don't they?

If you sell your products exclusively online/mailorder then you have to run a lot of adverts, if you didn't how is anybody going to know you are there to buy from.

Yes and not alienating their current and potential customers.

If I remember right Brant used 'guerilla marketing' tactics when he worked at Bikemagic to get On-One up and running, I think he politely got asked to leave because of it as well.

But yeah AB they do seem to rely on word of mouth and good reviews in the mags to market their products now.

ever noticed how a lot of them promote a specific product/company that he sells rather than superstar components? eg seperate adds for seatposts, cranks etc, almost like he doesnt want to taint one part of the business with another (not that any seem to have a good rep)

Mags and newspapers are in a business and would print adverts for The Circles of Hell if they paid the bills on time

The difference is also down to the fact that on-one are now an established company, that do bikes, rather than a fly by night affair doing anodised cut price trinkets.

They also built their company gradually and had a few viral marketing experts on board, compared to the one man (numpty?) band thats going for maximum exposure.

Guerrila marketing? They ALL do it. Some are just more subtle whilst others arent.

In relation to the posts these are made by KS – Kind Shock, which are sold by many other shops and distributors. They are the most popular seatposts I have come across. All the Italians and the French use them with very little problems unlike the joplin one.

There are a lot of ads. I remember Superstar claiming that they were cheaper cause they cut out all the marketing spend etc i wonder how that works now…

A lot of adverts are based on click-thru rates. So unless people are actually following the banners to the websites then potentially they are relatively cheap.

Superstar Components are the best value for money components on the market and Fruit/Neil is a highly under-rated person, who is only in business to help the poor MTBer who has been too long the prey of those unscrupulous LBS owners and importers.

(If the money isn't in my account by close of play tomorrow I'll retract that comment).

'bad batch' ? – no such thing! when i drilled out the paint on some formular b4 replacements to fit and had the helpful/cheekiness to suggest that may have a quality problem was told that i must have modified the brake set up some time in the past

….just to add to the any publicity is good publicity in a subtractive way

Having tried discobrakes a few times I've decided not to use them again. I found the pad life to be extremely poor and the performance dropped off noticeably when they were half worn.

I've got superstar pads front and rear on my bike at the moment (found a jiffy bag stuffed with them down the side of a cupboard).

They last, even though I really did use them ALOT last weekend in the Lakes.

Well, I'm afraid that's rubbish! Disco had a bad batch around the same time a Superstar did. I know this as I had 3 pairs fail on me.
And just like SS, the pads are fine now.
