I have just put my car on e~Bay and recieved an email from someone who wants to buy it.
So far, so good.
They want to paypal me directly to avoid fees. Does this sound dodgy?
Thanks for your response. Making a bid/buy it now on the auction is not a problem but that will take a long time and you will also be over charged by paypal for receiving a payment for an ebay auction. I'll suggest we conclude everything right now by me responding to the paypal money request you will send me. Please get back to me a.s.a.p. My paypal email is xxx and you can also send me your paypal email so i can make the payment asap.
paypal for a car?
sounds like opening yourself up for a world of disputed transactions. Particularly if you go outside of ebay.
why not cash on collection?
Tell him to turn up with cash if he's that bothered about saving you Paypal charges.
I wouldn't be accepting paypal payment for a car.
Have they asked anyhting at all about the car? Sounds like they are scammers to me.

This exactly.
It's YOU saving the fees not him anyway.
Maybe they don't have the cash? Paypal will allow them to pay by CC.
And WCA will be avoiding fees, not the buyer.
If they pay, transfer the funds into your bank acc before they turn up and take the car. They will have no recourse as far as I can see.
You then close the auction (No longer for sale, or Agreed not to go through with sale) and everyone's happy. Can't see a scam.
Don't worry. Someone else has just bought it. Paypal deposit and cash on collection.
It's YOU saving the fees not him anyway.
Who's said anything to the contrary?
I don't really get why everyone is so reticent to sell outside of eBay. Their protection basically means that as a seller you'll get shafted, so why not save their exorbitant fees and do it outside of eBay!?
It's a bit of an odd note, I'd trust your instinct, which is obviously that it's dodgy. If they want to pay cash on collection then that's probably a better bet!
Can't see a scam.
I'm pretty sure there's way's of reversing payment of a Paypal invoice.
Ebay auction has nothing to do with it.
Can't see a scam.
You aren't looking hard enough.
They send you a confirmation email supposedly from Paypal to say funds received...??
Cash is king. If it's a good car, then someone genuine will buy it with cash.
Cash is king! Anything else is just iffy.
given my recent experience, if you have a good offer outside the auction and they will pay cash take it, most winning bids on cars are fantasisits who get in the way of the deal and there is no real comeback on them
Tell him to turn up with cash

Too late to comment WCA?
My experiance in selling boats on eBay (dinghies) led to one Guy buying but not paying after winning bid, came to collect and decided not to buy and wanted his money back, caused all sorts of angst in the dinghy park i can tell you.. got quite heated at one point ๐ฏ
Moral... you meet all sorts in this world.
Sounds like you are sorted now but for future reference never accept Paypal for anything you can't send with a signed for courier/mail service.
Paypal will automatically find in the buyers favour for an item not received dispute if the buyer collected it or you delivered yourself.
cash is king, paypal is a pox ridden whore
paypal is a pox ridden whore
Is that a bad thing?

I thought Paypal protection etc doesn't cover automotive purchases?
why not give it a "Buy it now" price?

So he won the auction, but didn't actually pay anything, turned up in person, changed his mind and wanted a refund of the money he hadn't actually paid in the first place?
Two words, get and bent.
