So sat here watching “meet the little fockers” (wife’s choice) and wondering whether rober de.niro has one last “gangster” movie left in him, he seems to just do lamer and lamer comedy or kids movies nowadays. Surely there must be a good movie script out there needing a sinister bad guy ( cape fear esque) or an old school new York gangster? (goodfellas, casino etc)

I really hope he makes something better than this pants before he retires for good.

EDIT: it is mildly amusing for a Sunday night movie, but I can’t take him seriously anymore 🙁

    Agreed, fantastic actor.

Fockers stuff isn’t too bad tho.

How could you mention all those great films and not mention Heat!!!!! One of the best films ever.

My point wasn’t the great movies he’s been in and there’s too numerous to mention. My point was when is he gonna stop doing these comedy/kids movies and go back to his roots and do something good. I feel he needs 1 last AMAZING Movie ( like HEAT, CASINO, GOODFELLAS, BRONX TALE, TAXI DRIVER , DEER HUNTER, GODFATHER ETC ETC)

Interesting thread. I think he will pull something out of the bag. It may be a complete surprise like Brando’s performance in Godfather.

Pacino is the same, both great actors in their day now just resorted to a mixture of nonsense and parodying the roles that made them great.

Of course he will, à la Eastwood in Gran Torino.

He was one of the greatest method actors of his time and some of his comedy stuff has been quite good. Yeah, some of it has been phoned in too. Always a legend in my eyes. The “you talkin’ to me” scene in Taxi Driver – so often badly imitated – chilling and brilliantly acted. As was his portrayal of Jake La Motta in Raging Bull.

I’ve thought about this a bit before too. My conclusion is usually that he just isn’t “in that place” any more. You have to remember that he is a method actor, meaning that he immerses himself in the role completely (e.g. when he was making Goodfellas he hung out the with guys who knew the real Jimmy the Gent, and went to meet with him in prison).

I’m just not convinced he is interested in doing that any more. Even his character in Heat was generally on the lighter side, compared to his classic movies: He was the epitome of the gentle-hearted crook.

Pacino and De Niro are 2 of my all-time favourite actors and when they came together to make Heat, it certainly didn’t disappoint. I know exactly what your saying organic and I hope he does make another great bad boy role film soon 🙂

His films bore the pants off me now. It’s hard to find a straight to DVD film he isn’t in ! Well past his sell by date I reckon .

Apparantley Scorcese has a gangster film in the works (or has been for a while) that will reunite De Niro and, more importantly, Joe Pesci.

He did play quite a good baddie in Limitless to be fair.

And although it was before all this comedy stuff, Cape Fear was an awesome performance.

I think my fab RDN scene: Sleepers, where one of the kids, (can’t remember actor) tells him (father bobby) about the abuse. An unscripted scene over music where as the story unfolds to father hobby the camera zooms in on his face and he starts to weep. Truly moving, truly great actor. I want more of this , not adventures of rocky and bullwinkle.

He’s made some awesome films. But I’ll admit that ‘Midnight Run’ is still one of my fav’s. Give him a great script and he is a really funny actor in action/comedy roles.

    Cape Fear also.

Pacino mostly annoys me, don’t get him.

Pacino is amazing in his earlier films. Older he got the more he just seemed to shout. De Niro was THE man in Heat, Pacino shouty.

I found De Niro pretty funny in Star Dust as the ships captain.

And agree with Hadge Heat a great film with one of the best shoot outs ever.

Some more (in my eyes) De Niro greats… Some of them, fairly recent too…

    Righteous Kill (with Al Pacino)
    The Score
    Ronin
    Cop Land
    Sleepers
    Casino
    Goodfella’s

De Niro and Pacino, between them, the 2 greatest actors ever IMO (some overly parodied roles aside), are 68 and 72 respectively now. To be fair, I think unless someone is going to come out with a Brando-esque Don Corleone role for either of them, their gangster days are kinda behind them sadly.

Forgot about The Score. Though IMO Edward Norton provides a better character.

Ronin is dreadful! If has a tiny role in Copland too, tho it is a good film.

Only film I cried at was ‘everybody’s fine’ I saw it just after my uncle died and related to his role. Would love him to make a few more gangster films.

De Niro needs a Jack Nicolson in The Departed type role, that’s for sure.
Personally, I can’t believe how overrated Heat is.
