So, has Luke gone to the Dark Side or are we just getting teased?

It looks amazing.

does anyone know if there is a huge (3 year) wait between the release of the new films or a more reasonable year or so?

I am far too excited as is decent for a grown man. Expectations are high but so far, the trailers are not disappointing.

My main fear is that my wife sees me cry watching this more than at our wedding. I confess I filled up when Han appeared on the trailer.
And yes, I do have a wife.

My wife doesn't get it. I asked her if she wanted a ticket for the 12.01 am showing on the 17th and she tutted and walked off.
I'll be going on my own then.
Possibly in fancy dress.

Looks fab. First proper film I remember in 1977 when my Grandma took me. She was mildly perturbed by the whole experience. I was hooked. I'm just going to pretend the prequels didn't happen and go straight from return of the jedi to this one.

It is reasonably easy to make a good trailer. Experience suggests it's really tricky to make a good Star Wars film. We'll see when it comes out.

It looks fantastic, I'll be going about Xmas time with my mates (we all grew up with it) and our kids.

I think it'll be much better than the prequels, the director has been very good, left his ego at home and is making a Star Wars film, not a JJ Abrams film or an elongated toy advert.

BUT, and it's a big but, I won't be as good as the originals, not for me anyway, as a 37 year old I just don't have the same wide-eyed wonder that I had when I was 5, I don't have the same imagination anymore. I think if I accept that I'll enjoy it more.

Also, I think I know why Luke is hardly in the trailer and not on the poster, but I won't spoil it for anyone.

Yeah 50/50 on the trailer myself, JJ makes fun but ultimately disposable blockbusters ,Star Wars deserves something better.
I liked the look of the bits with the new cast, Captain Phasma , I hope won't be to clichéd a baddie.
Not sure about Han solo, and 'everything g you've heard was true' line, sounds a bit formulaic Hollywood.

Also Chewbacca should be looking older somehow !

Does. Not. Compute.

After the so-called prequels, I thought it was dead, but no. Abrams seems to know just how to get me to let it in.

Exactly! What stops the lightsaber firing off into outer space indefinitely like some kind of enormous laser pointer?

Yep - the design for that droid is 100% based on selling a (very cool) toy.

The trailer certainly looks good. Fingers crossed...

So why are Leia and Han looking so sad? theories heard so far:
- Luke's turned to the dark side
- Luke dies

Sorry, but I'm very unconvinced after seeing this.

Looks like the actual thing could be terribly disappointing.

Not quite sure what I can put my finger on about this trailer, other than it all just seems a bit - meh. It looks like the trailer for any other generic 2010s action film, albeit with CGI X-wings and the Millennium Falcon in it.

Sorry.. 😐

So, this is an allegory for Islamic State then?

The problem is that our generation have Luke, Han, Leia, Obi Wan, DV, etc held up as huge characters that are part of our cultural heritage as kids in that era. The new characters are going to be hard to hold up to that so we're likely to have a very different view to younger generations. Also, until the full three film story unfolds, it's hard to see where they'll fit in or how big they'll be - Luke, the farmboy in the first film was hardly anything grand but became that over the course of the three films.

But ultimately it's just make-believe...

It will be a good, watchable 7/10 film. It won't come close to the originals but it will be much much better than the steaming heap of dung that was 1-3.

Not sure about Han solo, and 'everything g you've heard was true' line, sounds a bit formulaic Hollywood.

I'm guessing that the whole point of that coming from Han is that he was the main sceptic of 'hokey religions being no match for a blaster' in the previous films. The fact he's the one now saying it's all true carries much more weight; what's happened to change his mind?

What stops the lightsaber firing off into outer space indefinitely like some kind of enormous laser pointer?

Focusing crystals and a force containment field. Erm, I imagine. *cough*

Guessing that Luke gets killed somehow early on which provides the motive for Solo's & Leia's daughter (guessing again) to learn the ways of the force and set off with the awol stormtrooper to go get the baddie.
I shall be taking a trip to machester to see it at the Imax, should be rather good.

I'd venture to say it'll be better than the originals, which when stripped of nostalgia aren't actually very good. So, that's not saying much.

The originals don't come close to the originals. Rewatching them with Nem Jnr made me realise that. Still really enjoy them but they're not the holy grails of films that some make them out to be.

The originals are the originals. It's like when people waffle on about the Beatles. I hate the Beatles with a passion, properly rubbish music to me, but I can imagine and appreciate that back in their day they blew the socks off everyone as they were new and ushered in a new era of music. Lots of people look back at them all teary eye'd and waffle on about how good they were, but that's just nostalgia. Similar for the original star wars - for me the original films will never be bettered because one of my earliest memories was queueing up with my dad to watch A New Hope and it blew my mind, films that were way ahead of their time and I can't think of any film or films that have had such an impact since.

JJ Abrams has a big wrong to right, i'm rooting for the new film, but will learn from the dissapointments of the pre-quels and quell my excitement and reserve judgement. The trailer does look chuffing good though.

the star trek films are all 7/10, I'm assuming a similar level

but if that poster above is real and not a wind up, a whole load of bl00dy Jar Jar is setting my expectation at a 4/10

I'm not watching the trailer, what film needs 3 trailers ?? and I don't believe that they don't give the game away either, the second one told too much

[dons flameproof suit] I’ve watched the prequels many, many times with my 8 year old lad. Watching them with him (the target demographic) is a different experience to watching them on my own as a cynical adult who grew up in the 70s and 80s with the original films. Episode II and III aren’t too bad and, as far as he is concerned, are better than IV, V and VI. [/dons flameproof suit]

When I was a kid I wanted to be Han Solo and ran around making silly blaster noises along with every other lad in the playground, but for him Han, Luke and Leia are just peripheral characters.
The one he wants to be is Anakin. He has the action figures, he has the costume, he has the light sabres (plural - Anakin has uses blue, green and red at various pints) and he has practised the moody stare.

Really looking forward to watching VII, but I’ll do it with the boy.

Episode I blows goats. Even he has worked this out.

+1 for Harry the Spider - The whole series THUS FAR is supposed to be the tale of Anakin / Vader's fall from grace and subsequent redemption.

Episode I blows goats. Even he has worked this out.

And this is why the Machete Order was conceived..... which kind of twists it around to make it about Luke instead which links neatly to the next film...

The first film is great - it's very honest, just a great action film aimed at kids like The Goonies & many others. The two original sequels were arguably more about shifting toys than wrapping up the plot and the prequels were definitely about selling toys & parting the (now adult) fanboys from their hard-earned.

Obviously there will be more merchandising now than ever before seeing as Disney is involved but my hope for these new films is that they are actually trying to make decent films/stories in their own right. I think bringing in the iconoclastic Abrams shows they want to take the films in the different direction. At the very least, they can't possibly be worse than the sequels, so the only way is up!

As for when the next movies are released. The idea is every two years, with a Star Wars Anthology film in between. So this year Episode 7 next year is Rogue One. Year after Episode 8.

There is a Blog with all the rumours compiled into a rough draft of the story. This trailer confirms a lot of what is in the leaks.

How long do Wookie's live for? Didn't he appear in the last prequel?

He was 200 or so in the original trilogy.

In the poster the wayward stormtrooper is seen holding a blue lightsabre. Blue is the colour of annakin's saber in episodes 1-3, it is then taken from him by kenobi after he defeats him at the lava planet. He then gives it to luke in epi 4 'your father wanted you to have this' and then vader chops luke's hand off at the end of empire and the hand and saber fall into the depths of cloud city. So where does that guy get a blue saber?
Also howcome the stormtrooper is a black fella, I thought all the storm troopers were clones of Jango Fett?

The clones in Episodes II and III were phased out due to their accelerated growth and shortened life span and replaced by paid soldiers in the 20 years before Episode IV. I read this in one of my son’s many books on the subject.

+1

Clones had an accelerated life so basically they died out and were replaced with normal people. Which maybe explains why they could never actually hit their targets 🙂

Except, none of that material is canon since the great Disney reset.

That said, we're assuming that a) he's stormtrooper and not just in disguise as one like (spoilers) Luke was in ep4 and that b) they're stormtroopers at all and not something else entirely.

.To march about looking menacing in white armour.
.Must be prepared to run away whenever little furry teddy bears appear with wooden spears and be completely useless in battle in every way.
