[Closed] Clarks Clout 1 brakes

Just bought some myself, to go on a very cheap gravel bike I'm converting to flat bars.

Watching with interest...

Running Clark’s m2’s superb for money(pads are cheap) no complaints otherwise. The clouts look even better value

Recently fitted quite a few sets helping a local shop out with builds. All set up very easily and seem to work well but obviously not ridden them anywhere. Shimano dash pot fits for a quick lever bleed after shortening hoses. Very good for the money.

Only thing missing is a hinged or split lever clamp.

I have had the M2s on commuter for ages(changed pads to shimano as they were dangerous). The rear calliper Lasted about 2 years so put a clout on. Been fine apart from when new had to faff to stop brake oscillating. This went away after a few weeks when disk bedded in.

I just bought a pair for a kids bike. for £38 they are absolutely fine. you get everything you need including adapters/bolts/rotors/olives and barbs.

Having set them up and bedded them in they seem to have more than enough bite for their intended purpose. If she decides to start doing the mega then maybe I'll have to invest in better brakes for xc/trail riding they'll be spot on

Do these use Shimano mineral oil?
Could do with a set for my turbo/pub bike.

I'm looking for some cheap brakes to finish a bike build I'm doing out of bits in the garage. Are these good enough it keep me vaguely upright on the trails or would I be better spending a bit more on the M2 or M3's?

Been happy using the M2 on my last two bikes... They're decent, basic, cheap brakes.

Going to use some old 180 rotors I already have. Do these use the b01s pads does anyone know?

I've a set in my cargo bike.. paid about 38 ish too...

they're actually really effective! very on/off feeling... can almost hear the pad "tap" the rotor when you pull the lever!

but they stop a heavy cargo bike with ease!

Thread bump, just bought one of these to go on the back of an old dirt jump bike worth about £2.50 but the hose is a bit long. The vid on the Clarks site shows special tools like cutters and crimpers/swagers being used that probably cost more than the brake to buy, anyone successfully done it on the cheap with a sharp knife and re-using the barb?

It's not cutting the hose straight that bothers me, it's the complicated special tool he used to fit the new barb into the end. I might just have a go and see if I can re-use the original one without any leaks.

Clamp the hose in a hose clamp and tap the barb/olive home with rubber mallet, job done...

Does anyone elses clout brakes pump up after the first squeeze? On mine The pad springs seem to push the pads back into the caliper too much.

It might be a bad bleed from factory I suppose?

Thought I'd crack on with shortening the hose, taking a gamble that the fancy hose gripper/cutter/crimper tool in the Clarks video could be replicated with a bit of ootb thinking and a multitude of other tools, and I'd be able to reuse the original barb and olive like every other brake I've had.

Unfortunately not.

As you can see the barb pushes into the hose then the olive crimps over it crushing the hose outer over the barb making the seal. I cut away the hose from this hoping I'd be able to use it before realising it wasn't going to happen. No new fittings were included so now I have a useless brake

Going to search for a replacement union now and hopefully the action of tightening it into the lever body will make the crimp so I can avoid buying a special one use tool. It doesn't look like any brake fitting I've seen before though, it's a definite male end with a rubber O ring.

Another update, couldn't find specific Clout fittings anywhere, though the olives look the same as symmetrical Magura ones but at £9.95 each that wasn't going to happen

What I thought was a rubber o ring was actually just the exposed hose outer after the olive had been crimped on, I had a few universal olives in my tool box so thought I'd try one. They weren't quite the right size, I had to heat up the hose then douse the barb in freezing spray to get it in, and even then it needed some pretty big whacks from a proper hammer, and then the newly expanded hose was too big for the olive to slide over so that needed hot and cold treatment too. Got it all assembled and cranked up tight though and the brake works fine with no leaks, so mission successful I'd say.

TL/DR: universal olives work if you need to shorten the hose, just a right PITA to fit.

These look identical to the Promax Evolves on my lads Saracen Mantra 24.

I had the exact same issue with the barb/olive thing. I bought some Hayes replacements, that didn't have the o-ring, and they seem to have worked fine.
