    Hi All,

I’ve got a problem started of late. When I’m in largest ring on cassette, the chain slips to 2nd or 3rd if I pedal too hard. Shifting is perfect though, it just doesn’t stay in 1st gear.

You know thwe skip you get when you put on a new chain but not cassette? Like that…

I was looking at the whole thing and scratching my head then I saw this: Bottom cog on my mech has spiked teeth due to wear. Will this be the cause? I’ll be changing it anyway but I’d really like to know as I nearly smashed my teeth today after being launched through said slippage.

By the way, if it matters, cassette is 2011 XT, the mech is 2008. Cassette and chain bought together.

    Cheers in advance everyone. 😉

Hard tail or FS? Play in bushes/bearings, rear wheel tight?

    Odd.

After this happens what position is the shifter in?

Try to recreate it on the road to work out the cause.

I rectified this problem on Mrs S’s bike today. I turned out to be a split jockey wheel :s

Moe, you may have cracked it mate!!!!!

Like I said, bottom jockey is spiked, not toothed, I’ll check it properly.

So you get off the bike, chain is on say 3rd cog, but shifter in 1st position?

    B tension adjustment screw?

Probably not, could be with a slight tweak though!

What position is the mech in when it slips into 2nd or 3rd?

Does the mech stay in the first position, or does it drop down into 2nd or 3rd?
