hello have a Nikon d40 and really did not use it till recently but using it more and more so will this lenses fit the body? Is it a good lenses?

The Nikon ED AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-200 mm f/4-5.6G Telephoto Zoom Lens is a high-powered standard DX zoom lens with enhanced telephoto capabilities and a Silent Wave Motor (SWM) for use with the Nikon DX format digital SLR cameras.

Capture stunning photos from a distance

The 55-200mm zoom range is equivalent to an 82.5-300mm lens in 35mm format and it offers maximum versatility.

and where is a plain English simple place to find out what the camera does in manual setting?

    Thanks

Yes it will fit fine as its an AF-S lens so it contains the auto focus motor that your D40 needs. I’ve got one and I’m happy with it although I don’t have anything to compare it with to say if it bettor or worse if you get my meaning!
