Had a long debate with someone over this.
Would you say aiming power tools as gifts for men is sexist?
If this was reversed, where (stereotypical) the advert said ‘Perfect for Mum’ next to an iron or vacuum cleaner, would that be okay?
Aren’t they saying its an ideal gift for fathers day rather than for men? Its more cashing in on made up holidays than sexism IMO. Plenty of this sort of thing on ebay for balance:
Yeah, I’d happily get a power tool as a present* (and often do). I would die a painful death if I bought my wife a vacuum cleaner as a present.
*Although it would be nice to be afforded the time to actually use it when I want rather than constantly being told ‘we need to do this’ or ‘we’ve got to go there’.
And presumably you both concluded that sexism has been the preserve of men for so very long that diminishing it as an issue by getting all whiney and entitled might in itself also be sexism?

I doesn’t discriminate against either sex. I very much doubt that B&Q ran a similar ad in March for Mothers Day, but if you’re suggesting that that’s sexist – I’d like to see the data to suggest an equal amount of Women as Men would consider a Power Tool a nice gift to themselves.
The idea that we would assume that everyone, everywhere is exactly the same is a more 90s outdated “must be PC” idea – Women and Men are different, whilst if you consider the whole global population than of course there is a HUGE overlap, but to think to be a ‘nice person’ you should treat everyone as some kind of gender-less, ageless, shapeless, culture-less blob you’re wrong – we should never discriminate against anyone because of who they are – but we shouldn’t pretend differences don’t exist.
I bought the wife a dyson handheld for her birthday once (after hearing her tell someone she really wanted one)
She said thank you ( it wasn’t her only present btw)
Nothing here to see
But seriously, those adverts are actual sexist….guys don’t have it half as bad.
just have a look at the Diet Coke ads for a direct comparison though, half naked oiled lad selling a drink, or how about the levi’s ad with your man whipping everything off to sell some clothes…
(i don’t thought, i could hactually be in a diet coke ad, oh yes)
not that i really give a monkey’s either way, or maybe i do 😕 … can someone tell me what to think please?
We got a new vaccuum cleaner just before Christmas and like the wag that I am I put a picture of it on facebook saying “The wife’s christmas present has arrived…”
Selling power tools to men is not sexist.
Making your employee’s life hell for getting pregnant is sexist.
Calling a dad looking after his kids “babysitting” is sexist.
Having a woman in a bikini hold up an umbrella for the male racing drivers is sexist.
The way that family courts treat fathers is often very sexist.
Drills are not sexist. Phallic, but not sexist.
