Been using Garmin 520 for years its great for 95% of what i normally. however, bit worried with its breadcrumb navigation that if i take a wrong turn on the trail it will not be so easy to relocate.

Any recommendations on best off road trail GPS? Would prob prefer to stay with garmin range through knowledge of the products unless another brand is significantly better for this task?

Don’t want to spend any more than i need to.

    Any help much appreciated

I prefer AA batteries so would recommend a Garmin Oregon.

I used a 520 with occasional lookups to OS maps on my phone to ride the Badger divide.

You can put mapping on the 520 or the 520 plus comes with topo-active maps. But both are little small but doable.

Cheap and cheerful, I’m looking at the e-trex range for an AA battery option.

Oregon scotroutes mentions would be my choice if not looking cheap and cheerful.

Another Garmin Oregon user here, the AA batteries either give longer use time is using lithium ones or allow you to just carry a few spare/rechargeables.

For multi-day stuff I use an Oregon. Can load it with whatever maps you prefer, uses AA batteries (rechargeable or not), big screen. Upto the 700 series now but you should be able to find older models as well.

I’ve had 20hrs out of one charge, that’s with a lot of the energy saving tricks and not looking at it every five minutes – easy up in Scotland where you set off on a track and it’s three hours before you come to a junction.

The Etrex models are also popular (and a bit lighter since they don’t have the recharging circuitry built-in like the Oregon).
