Is it possible to get a protective mat or similar in order to use a BBQ on wooden decking? I haven’t fired it up yet, but can see all the ways it can go wrong in my mind…

Or would you just plonk the BBQ in the middle of the lawn and accept a slightly boggy walk to get your burgers?

Just wet the wood with a watering can, keep one handy.

Your decking is made of deck boards not dry kindling.

It won’t go on fire unless you try to set it on fire.

Don’t try to set it on fire and you will be fine

Gas or charcoal? We regularly sit our gas Weber Q directly on the beach hut decking without its stand and no issues at all.

And remember you can always douse the flames with the beer you are holding, just ensure that you have a backup can close to hand when you down to the lasts sips.

I run my big BBQ over decking with no issues, alternatively just put some thick ply on the deck directly underneath, i’ve done this with a fire bowl and its fine.

A weber type BBQ can be extinguished after use by closing the vents. I think you’ll be fine.

Having said that, my brother managed to set his house on fire in a BBQ related incident.
