Moving house and have a 2001 Spesh Rockhopper Comp helmet.

I have the matching bike to go with it 🙂 , which still gets used, but haven’t used the lid for about 10 years.

Obviously, it’s no use as a lid, but wondering if it’s of any use to anyone as a display item?

Do people collect such things?

They make lovely hanging baskets. In a few months plant them up with a good quality compost and fill with trailing lobelia and ivy leaf geraniums. XC helmets work best – full face don’t quite cut it.

The bike itself could also be filled with compost, and used to grow strawberries.

I already have a battered helmet I take out to polish and rub every now and again, doing the same with another persons just seems a bit wrong

Seems people collect old E2’s – I have 3 in the shed! 1st ones ancient, 2nd one is badly dented and the 3rd is cracked in half. They all got written off in the space of a year and that is the reason I now dont have top of the range helmets. I think I am just holding onto them just so that I can say that I used to buy the best.

I take a lot of pleasure from smashing my old helmets with a hammer.
It’s my version of product testing and I feel hitting it with a lump hammer accurately emulates the typical conditions of a bike crash… into a hammer.

I have a Bell helmet I won at Grundig World Cup race raffle circa 90-91, signed by Tim Gould, knocking around the garage somewhere. Awaits a stream of collectors to my howff.

I have an old Bell polystyrene with no outer shell (as standard) in white.

Also kept my orange and blue Giro Exodus.

What was the iconic Specialized polystyrene helmet with the red (or sometimes blue?) fabric cover called?

I still have one of those in the garage, keeping it in case I want to go to a fancy dress party as Ned Overend.

I have a couple of old broken ones I keep as trophies along with the ripped t-shirt I was wearing when I was savaged by a cow, the pins used to put my elbow back together, the sock with a hole made by a chain adjuster bolt (matching scar on foot), etc, etc.

I’ve never won anything so keep reminders of my epic fails instead.

Surely the only retro helmet worth collecting is an Etto – with ears!

Chakaping – I think that was (and still is) a Specialized Airforce. I say still is because mine is still in the garage at my Dads! They also did them with ayellow fabric/mesh cover. The only pics I can find on the web are of more recent helmets with the same name(Bikepro seems to be down). Typical of Specialized recycling names of products – how many items called Ground Control have they had?
