MegaSack DRAW - 6pm Christmas Eve - LIVE on our YouTube Channel
Does anyone know of an Android app that will give you your current elevation?
Or even one that logs elevation as you move around?
My Tracks does elevation while recording a route but it's all over the place in my experience. It does give you a profile, but I wouldn't call it accurate.
Memory Map does it for me.
Viewranger does it too. The figures are a bit out sometimes but the graphs let you see any anomalies.
Get Altitude. Doesn't log it though & you need 3G signal. I use it for calibrating the altimeter on my watch at the start of rides/hikes (in conjunction with a map)
any of the tracking apps but GPS altitude is notoriously iffy. Strave does a recalc on upload based on route.

- that's exactly what I want it for, recalibrating my altimeter watch when in places where I don't have an OS map handy
Works perfectly then, as long as you have the signal, which can be a bit hit & miss in the hills. It uses Google Maps though, and you can select a point on the map and get the altitude, so if you know that it is unlikely there will be a signal in the area you're heading to you can find the start point of the ride and get the details before you arrive.

Will this do the job? You'll have to give it a nearby airport to update the setting, but I think it'll be broadly accurate for an hour or two after that. Might not work on your phone though.
Strava logs your elevation
Most accurate would be to get gvsig mini maps and you can then check your position on the OS map at any time (using the GPS provided position) and see your exact elevation.
Phone GPS based elevation is never very accurate.

Always found it to be pretty much spot on - compared to the map as well.
Map elevation correction based on GPS position can be quite inaccurate, depending where you are. Probably very accurate in Holland or the Fens, but potentially really bad if traversing a steep hill/mountain/cliff.
Only recalc that Strava (or any tracker) will do is smoothing of data or throwing out obviously bad data, using an arbitrary rule to do so. Or at least that was the case the last time I played with it.
