I've ridden an Orange sub 5 for nine years now; throughly enjoyed it, but it's quite an old bike now and I think things have moved on a bit since the bike was made in 2000.
I quite like the look of the Trek Remedy 9, the SC Blur LTc, and I like what I read about the Lapierre Spicey, but have no experience of riding any of these. I can get a demo ride on the first two contenders, but the Lapierres are less common where I live.
Anyway, I thought that I'd consult the forum to see if anyone has experience of these three bikes, or something else similar that Ive perhaps overlooked.
I use the bike for both the man made trails in Wales, and also the natural trails. I do also ride a hardtail, but I definitely wouldn't want to go below 5" travel for the full suspension bike. The idea of a lightweight responsive 6" travel AM bike is very enticing, so Id appreciate advice as they don't come cheap.

I like the idea of carbon, but despite crashing only rarely, it'd be fair to say that over 9 years, the Orange has had a few knocks. Some of the rocks that belt off the down tube on a loose fast descent and enough to make you think twice about carbon, but I am thinking about it nonetheless.

So, your advice please, light, sharp handling without being twitchy, competent suspension with good small bump sensitivity, tracks well, well built and will last me for the next five years or more.

thanks in anticipation

Smallish at 5' 8"; so for the kind of stuff that I'd want to do on a 6" travel bike it'd be a close run thing between a small or a medium frame. Small if the frames run large, as I like to be able to move well forward / back on the bike.

I was looking at the Banshee Rune, SC BLT, B4X and Ibis Mojo untill I found this....

How about one of these for £500 brand new including an 09 Fox RP23?

This is mine and I absolutely love it, it pedals like a hardtail even out the saddle, it's the 07 Pyre which has 5.5" of travel whereas the latest Pyre is more xc orientated with only 4" travel.

The shop I bought it from still have a 16" and a 14"...mines a 17"

Some 36s from the bike outlet, hope hoops from winstanleys and thats only just over £1k, leaveing plenty for some pimp drivetrain/finishing kit.

If you're anywhere near Newport/Cwmcarn you are welcome to have a quick blast on mine.

That looks very classy, simple lines but impressively specced. You don't see many of those on the trails. How's the rear triangle for flex / tracking and tyre clearance.
Also thanks for the offer of a a quick try out, I'm mid Wales, but the thought is much appreciated anyway.
Which shop has these 09 frames?

It's a Canadian shop that sells on Ebay and Pinkbike, I didn't go through Ebay and got free shipping, which only took 5 days to arrive, 3 of those spent in East Midlands Airport....I'll mail you some links.

With propedal off it tracks terrain very well, the back end is incredably stiff with no lateral flex, good old Banshee internally ribbed box section. The attention to detail is awesome as well with all the custom CNC bits, sealed BB tube, internal gussets on the top and down tubes

I've got a 2.35 Maxxis and you could probably go a little bigger, not the greatest mud clearance ever but it doesn't bother me.
