Misses and I are planning to spend a few days in May in Mid-Wales. Bit of gentle walking, sightseeing etc. Was thinking of staying in Rhayader but open to suggestions of other towns to consider. Somewhere pleasant with a few decent pubs and restaurants.

You maybe wouldn’t normally consider a bunkhouse if staying with the Mrs, but I can recommend an excellent one that is a cut above any other I’ve stayed in (lots). The Hafren Forest Bunkhouse.. It’s very walker friendly, Darren is a Ten Tors scrutineer, he and Sarah are both Air Training Corps instructors with mountain leader qualifications and will guide you if you like, or give you some excellent advice if doing your own thing. Sarah does all the cooking which is superb. Comfy rest room, log fire and we came back to homemade cake after a wet and windy walk. We walked from the door up Plynlimon the highest mountain in mid Wales, to the sources of the Severn and Wye. There are some great lower level walks too if you fancy something gentler. We went mountain biking from there too, Darren arranged a local guide for not very much cash and came along with us on his own bike. It’s on the trans Cambrian MTB route and next to some awesome trails in the Hafren Forest. It’s near Llandiloes, which has some good pubs and restaurants and maybe on option if you fancy some posher accommodation. I’d still chose the bunkhouse though as it’s so good. Stunning, quiet and unspoiled part of the world, I’m sure you’ll have a great time wherever you stay.

Sounds great but you’re right, I wouldn’t be thanked for a bunkhouse

The Harbourmaster in Abereron is fantastic, if you’re heading that way.

You can stay in the Elan Valley itself and we love it. Really remote and out of the way.

I’ve stayed in Ty Morgans https://www.tymorgans.com/ty-morgans-rhayader/ a few times. It’s great – lovely people, quirky rooms, great food and a fab deli to get your sarnies made up. They own the pub (Lamb and Flag) opposite.

Only every stayed in Rhayader so can’t comment on other locations, but I like the town and we’ve had good times there. Always riding, not walking.

Check out AirBnB. We rented a place in a little hamlet near Rhayader, it was great value

The Tregaron area, inland from Cardigan Bay is wonderful. I like the Talbot in Tregaron a lot. It is rumored to have an elephant buried in the beer garden. It’s a nice place.

Pontrhydfendigaid is close by and has a lovely pub with good accommodation. Easy access to the wilds of the far end of the Elan Valley. I prefer the Black Lion.

And then there is Aberystwyth. I love it, it is such a truly wonderful place. Go there.

Shameless plug but you can rent my cottage in Aberdyfi.

Good pubs, close to beach with the hills behind for walking.

Then back to log burner for cosy evening 👍

Thanks everyone. Had my eye on Ty Morgans so your endorsements have sealed the deal.

Tiger your cottage looks great. Have bookmarked it for another time
